It is when the stack/SS tool kit clears the hole that a disaster is in the making. Problem exists regardless of what thingie is moving the parts.

A neodymium(1/4") magnet WILL raise the alignment pins out of the holes. Other stuff not so much.

Actually the SS Tool Kit does that already. However that one fell swoop business has a tendency to have them all fall off in one fell swoop!

But if the bottom if sized to fit snugly in the counterbore, which is larger than the diameter of the hole in the nut/washer, then this wouldn't be an issue. At least they couldn't slip off the bottom end, which is what I assume happens when you try to use the SS Tool Kit

I like that idea, Al. It reminds me of the "spindles" (aka spindle files) that clerks impaled receipts and such on back when. As in "Don't fold, spindle, or mutilate". I haven't seen one in ages, but apparently they're still being made.

I was kicking around a similar idea myself -- a small container, something like a prescription pill bottle, but smaller. You'd have a pocket in the box for the container, and when you wanted to take out the little washers (or whatever), you could just pick up the container and pour some out into your hand. But without lucking into just the right-sized container, your spindle-file concept would be much easier to make.

To make one very easily, just use a bolt a little smaller in diameter than the hole in the washers/nuts, and then put a properly sized nut with a little loctite on it to hold it in place.

I like the new "modular" stack that you added to post #3!

My first thought was "You're halfway there, so why not do parallelogram hinges?" But after thinking about it, I decided that you were wise to use the single-link hinge. That way you can lay the modules out flat, and they won't get tippy.
