I'm planning on drilling an access port in my greenie. I've seen 3" and even larger mentioned in other threads. If I were to leave the two existing mounting holes intact, I'd only be able to get a 2-1/4" diameter hole in comfortably.
How are people working around these issues?

Re: drilling access port - size question
Have never had to do this myself, but have seen multiple posts dealing with the lack of an access hole in the early "A" headstocks.
My "B" headstock hole is just barely big enough for my not-so-large hand, and I sure wouldn't want it any smaller.
Rather than try to reuse your existing logo plate mounting holes, I would make a larger carrier plate and attach the old logo plate to it, if you're striving for keeping the appearance as authentic as possible.
I searched the forum and found many posts on this subject ... stopped when I found this one which seemed unique and included some pictures.

Looks like the idea was to use a snap in type of cover plate from a model "B" headstock.
FYI, here are some pictures of my access hole and its cover.

Re: drilling access port - size question
I've never had an "A" headstock and can't answer the question. For info, the hole in later Greenies with the "B" headstock is ~3-1/4". The "C" headstock access is ~3-3/4". That's a huge difference for my hands. Neither is a completely round hole owing to mounting features. You could possibly emulate that, leaving tabs for the mounting holes, but that's more work than drilling an access hole. The larger holes are a vast improvement for other maintenance, but I would think you could lubricate sheaves through a smaller hole and this is the main purpose.

Thanks for the info gents. In the pictures above, is that clip behind the nameplate a modification or is that a stock plate?
