New to me Shopsmith 10 ER and jigsaw A-34
Just took posession of the Shopsmith 10 ER and it came with the Jigsaw. It has not been used for 30-40 years, looking for suggestions on getting it operational. I think I have most of the parts but everything has a bit of rust and won't move. The electric motor does run. It did not come with any saw blades or jigsaw blades and was looking for what size blades I need for the table saw and how long of blades I need for the jigsaw? Also if there are any videos that will help demonstrate the unit?
Thanks
Tom
Thanks

Table saw blades - maximum size is 8", the more common 7-1/4" blades will work fine.
Jigsaw blades - use 5" pinless scroll saw blades.

Re: New to me Shopsmith 10 ER and jigsaw A-34
Tom,
Again, welcome to the Shopsmith Forum and congratulations on your new-to-you find. The links Ron gave are a great reference for restoring your Shopsmith Model 10ER and the A-34 Jig Saw. As Ron said the size of the saw blade is 8" and they can be found. Using a smaller diameter blade will reduce the cutting depth but will work if that is not an issue. The Model 10's cannot use larger diameter blades since they are not designed to do so by the size of the table insert opening. The Jig Saw does use 5" Scroll Saw/Jig Saw Blades with the plain end. Do not use Scroll Saw Blades that cut both directions in the up and down stroke.
If you did not get an Owner's Manual with it, I would recommend downloading one from the topic near the top of this section titled Shopsmith Large Format Drawings Illustrations and more by Everett Davis. In the first post is a link to his google drive and on it you will find the section 10E and 10ER which has a restored Model 10ER Owner's Guide. Do get the 10ER one and not the Model 10E Owner's Guide. It may not be the exact manual for your Model 10ER as there were many changes to the parts during their production but the parts will be similar and the operation pretty much the same. So far I have identified 10 different Model 10ER Owner's Guides and have original copies of 8 of them.
Below is a PDF copy of the Jig Saw manual if you need one. It is for the early version of the A-34 Jig Saw but if you have the later A-34 Jig Saw the difference is the Lower Frame Assembly, the Drive Housing Cover and the number of screws to attach the Drive Housing Cover to the Lower Frame Assembly. The Table Insert also changed about the same time as the other parts first having a closed keyhole to an open keyhole.
_ We can help with any specific questions. Pictures and the serial number of your 10ER can help us give you the correct answers when you have questions. The Jig Saw does not have a serial number.
Lastly there is another thread you may find interesting called Shopsmith Model 10's What When and Where at the link below. It contains information on the history and changes made to the Model 10E and 10ER during their production from 1947 through 1953.

Re: New to me Shopsmith 10 ER and jigsaw A-34
Thanks for your quick replys. I will try to get pictures tomorrow. I am still not understanding the jigsaw unit, if you use a jigsaw blade are you only securing it to the bottom chuck or is a 5 inch blade long enough to lock it in to the upeer chuck as well? Are you cutting on the downstroke?
Thanks Tom
Thanks Tom
Re: New to me Shopsmith 10 ER and jigsaw A-34
Yes, the 5" blade is held in the upper and lower blade chucks. The lower end is powered, the upper is pulled down by tension on the blade and pulled up by the spring. I have used reversed tooth blades on mine, but it does tend to lift the work piece off the table if you don't go slowly.tketzer1 wrote: Sat May 21, 2022 4:19 pm Thanks for your quick replys. It is best to upload pictures directly to the forum so if your hosting site changes or goes away they are still available here.

It keeps telling me the image is too large and won't let me add any more photos. I have reduced them to .25MB and still can't add them. Any suggestions? The above links are google photos.

The attachment file size limit is 3MB.Anything smaller than that should be fine. Number of attachments is limited to 10.tketzer1 wrote: Sun May 22, 2022 3:15 pm It keeps telling me the image is too large and won't let me add any more photos. As far as the above links, I realize they are Google links but Google says they don't exist. The Google error is...
"404. That’s an error.
