Mark V -- Keyless Drill Chuck Adapter

I'm thinking of selling a drill chuck adapter for a Mark V that would sell for about $30 - $35 and would support JT33 taper for drill chuck mounting. I could offer keyless chucks as an option. This would give you a easy way to mount a JT33 keyless chuck.

Any interest?

An adapter to be able to use other chucks sounds interesting.

I have several keyless drill chucks that came with some Shopsmiths I brought. Since these 5/8" ID adapters puts the drill chuck a longer distance from the headstock, when there is any play in the quill bearing(s), it is diffficult to start and/or keep the drill bit centered. Also, I could not secure the drill bit as tight with the keyless drill chuck.

If your adapter can fit inside the drill chuck and can be secured over the quill shaft to where the drill chuck sets in about the same position as the original Shopsmith drill chuck, then there may be a market for this adapter. I was unable to machine one with my metal lathe that I felt safe using. I believe you can buy a keyless drill chuck from Jacob that fits the Shopsmith.

The adapter would probably add about 1/2 - 3/4 inch to the overall length of the current chuck. I'll have to play with it. I've got a greenie that I'll finish the overhall on once all the replacement parts show up which will still have a single bearing quill and I'll be able to test.

Bill, do you know what jacobs model? I've done some searching on the Jacobs site and don't find any shopsmith chucks listed or any chuck for that matter with a female 5/8" straight mount.

[align=left]What Mike suggested sounds a lot like what Bill Mayo says that he has found on some SS's. If I get a round-2-it, I might just visit my local machine shop and see what it wood take to create this adaptor. A keyless chuck might be nice, but it is knot high on my priority list.[/align]
