Goldie Paints and Accessories

Into my fourth Shopsmith repair and resto project, a 1960 Goldie. Been searching through the forum for paint tips, have heard about the Rustoleum hammered copper and gold, which will probably look good. Has anyone used these paints that can send post or send me some pictures? I used their Verde Green and Silver on my first restoration, loved the way it turned out.

Also, I've picked up a joiner and drum sander in green. Were accessories painted in the brown and tan as well? Any pictures on which parts were painted which color would be greatly appreciated.

As this project comes along, will post pictures here for all to enjoy.

To show off a little, here is the Greenie I restored last year that started the whole craze for me. Found it rusting behind the house we moved into in summer 2007.

Thanks, Bob. After who knows how many years it was sitting behind the house, I was shocked when I plugged it in and the motor slowly started turning until it broke free and roared to life! Built these things like tanks. Even the hardware came off easily with no broken bolts or stripped screws! Only thing I couldn't salvage were the tubes - rusted and pitted to the point of scrap metal.

Did a lot of researching before going with the Verde Green and Silver from Rustoleum. Results were well worth it - ended up having to sell it when a buyer for the 86 drove from 3 hours away and a previously undiagnoses problem with the power switch forced me to make the swap and sell the Greenie. Sad day, but looking forward to what the new Goldie will look like.

I tried to find something closer to the original cream / brown than the hammered gold. The hammered gold (Hammerrite)is awfully yellow. I couldn't find anything closer to the original light brown color in a hammered paint.. The hammered copper(Rustoleum) was closer than hammered bronze(darker) for the belt cover color. I strongly recommmend primer before top coat(s).

It is easy to get a smooth coat w/spray cans when you have a large number of parts to paint and you keep the coats thin. When you spray thicker coats, you get the hammered effect, but you get runs and drips. NOT GOOD.

Also... I learned alot reactivating, using the 500, and applying the lessons to the 520. Most notably, don't load up the 520 carriage w/ a floating table and expect to move the carriage w/o lifting on the floating table first. The carriage on the 500 is small but easy to move even on the painted way tubes.

As a Goldie, the 500, it is a delight to see and use.

Has anyone applied the hammered paint from a paint sprayer versus the rattle can? I have a Wagner airless sprayer I was going to try, also have access to a paint gun run by my air compressor. Curious if you could get a better finish through that.

Allsas - did you end up going with the hammered gold and copper, then?

Got all the parts taken down to basic components over the weekend. Decided this time to build a sandblast cabinet as I am still sweeping up grit from the last stripping job I did about 9 months ago!

Colors in you attached picture look like Deep Green and Silver...is that correct? I just painted my greenie with Deep Green and Verde Green

Dave - the unit pictured in my avatar was painted with the Verde Green and Silver, hammered finish from Rustoleum. The original Greenie paint is quite a bit paler than the Verde Green, but the final application leaves a much more vibrant look, in my opinion.
