10E Early Serial Number

Hello. I have owned several Shopsmiths over the past 35 years.

I was reading through this forum, started reading about SN of early 10E. The one that I have had for about ten years is SN 1009. Maybe the 8th production 10E?

Please let me know what you think!

Your Model 10E serial number 1009 is not only from the original 250 units made that started it all but is now the lowest serial number I have seen. It was made/shipped in November 1947 to one of the West Coast Montgomery Ward Stores. It is believed the Model 10E serial numbers started at 1001. Low Model 10E Shopsmith's serial numbers with an E prefix (E1143 is an example) were made later when an Eastern Plant went into production. There are Model 10ER Shopsmith's with lower, 3-digit serial numbers, but they were made later in Australia.

Now my questions about it.
How complete is it?
Do you have any of the original paperwork like manual, bill of sale, etc.?
Do you know any of its history like where it was originally purchased and how it finally made it to you?
Can you post more pictures of it?

I have two of the Model 10E Shopsmith's (S/N 1076 & 1077 see picture below) from that original group restored and one (S/N 1033) waiting to be restored. Finding original parts for them is very difficult. 1033 needs the original style Quill Collar.

The wood extension table boards are replicas I made since the originals were not in very good condition.

I bought it 10ish years ago at an Estate Sale in Dalton Gardens, Idaho. They said the estate owner bought it new. I put in storage and it's been there since. This week I will assemble it and post more pictures.

My three original Model 10E Shopsmith's were purchased in 2018 (1077), 2020 (1033) and 2021 (1076). Being on the West Coast makes it easier to find these Model 10E tools since the original shipment went to the West Coast Mongomery Ward stores.

Love my “new” 10E #9631. I’m guessing 1948. I was able to replace the quill bearings with the aid of Russ's video. Works fine now but rattles a bit in some speeds, I’m not too picky about the speed configuration of the belt so it’s no issue.

Serial number 9631 is probably from very early 1948. We like to see pictures which can also be helpful when asking questions about thse tools. Below is Shopsmith Model 10E serial number 8865 I restored several years ago. It would be very close to yours.

It is complete as it came from the factory plus has the Model A-34 Jig Saw, the Shaper Fence and Jointer Head in the gray box. The wood Extension Table is a replica I made for it since the original one was in bad shape. It is on a bench I made.

Even with this early into production Model 10E there had already been changes made to it. This one has the second (of 7) version of the Headstock and the Quill Collar has changed from the original. Many changes were made to the Model 10E and 10ER during their production.
