markv drive belt size
Can I purchase the drive belt at a local hardware store and if so what size. I do have a 4L 260 but for some reason it seems too tight and keeps getting caught in the upper vpully

That's the size that SS is selling for the Mark 5 drive belt. A24 or 4L260 is what my new one shows on the belt.
Re: markv drive belt size
Yes it is well lubricated. Seems like the A24 4l260 it's too short

This is the belt I got from SS last year. I just now replaced it with a link belt and like the link belt better so far....

FWIW Skip Campbell (10ER guru) does not recommend link belts. They create excessive ware in aluminum and other soft metal pulleys.

Yes there are arguments for and against here in the archives. Seems like Bill Mayo ultimately decided that the wear is not excessive enough to be concerned about. I'll run it for a little while and see how it goes. I may end up going back to a conventional belt. But I was not happy with the one I got from SS.

Re: markv drive belt size
OK I have the belt on and here's how I did it. I put the Shopsmith in the upright position. Then I removed the bottom three screws that hold the motor and the off on switch from the mounting hole. tilting the motor inward I was able to get the belt on. I know this seems a little unconventional but it's the only way I could get it on. It does run perfect now. I've watched several YouTube videos they make it look easy but it wasn't for me.
