Did this forum or the Shopsmith company sell you a used Shopsmith or tell you to take it apart and re-assemble it incorrectly? If you don't like our help you can have a full refund of the money you've paid us.

I just have to say that all of you have been incredibly patient and generous posting on this thread to help the OP (Original Poster). I barely call the discussion that ensued on this thread off-topic. I particularly found JPG's long post from yesterday to be very clear in explaining what happened on this thread and profusely polite. Yet the OP still didn't "get it" after JPG's post and showed disrespect. Perhaps the OP is new to online forums and particularly to this one...I doubt my post will help, but here goes:

This forum (website) is hosted by Shopsmith, but all of the people that post here are NOT employees of Shopsmith. ANY and ALL help one receives on this forum is provided free of charge by kind hearted people who care about helping other owners of Shopsmith equipment. Please show respect and gratitude for all help provided on this forum. Online forums will flow and meander around a given topic. Usually any diversion is unintentional and most of the time this journey that ALL take on a thread enlightens and helps many along the way. JMO (Just My Opinion - so don't call me JMO ;) )

I hope my post doesn't lead to this, but I just wanted to applaud all of you offering your help here. I just wonder if the OP thinks that some here work for Shopsmith based on a couple of his responses? Others have said it, but I just wanted to reiterate the fact that all here are offering help for free and outside of the umbrella of Shopsmith, the company, even though this forum is hosted by them and they pay for the hosting of the website and its storage. I think the Shopsmith domain name might confuse a new Shopsmith owner coming to this forum into thinking forum members are by extension also part of Shopsmith. Lastly, the knowledge available by members on this forum is vast covering many generations and iterations of Shopsmith equipment - so sometimes what seems like a simple question and answer is NOT so simple. ;)

I think what we are experiencing is a difference in perspective between those of us born before(or near) the mid-point of the last century of the previous millennium and those born closer to the end of it.

Time was when everyone was willing and eager to help each other.

Sadly times HAVE changed.

NOW we have REALLY gone 'off topic'. :eek:

P.S. I do not receive a pay check from SS either. :D

Haverstrawman, it gets a little contentious here sometimes. We speak our minds and then try to work things out. Sometimes people just disagree. You are still welcome back to the forum and we'll help you as best we can. For some reason we all like doing that.

We can also understand your frustration, please be patient with us. You have more to do to get your Shopsmith set up properly. There are instructions and many details here about alignment, cleaning, and protecting your Shopsmith. We can help find out why you get warnings for trying to access some of the most important web pages available on this forum. And finally, we would all benefit by your contributions to the forum. We want to hear about your woodworking and problems you encounter. Expressing frustration with Shopsmith is nothing new here.

I hope you are still with us here on the Shopsmith Forum. Our goal is to help other member and share information. Some of my posts go into a lot of detail that may not be specific to the topic at hand. I do that because of the many changes made to the Shopsmith tools over the years. I feel it is important to know about the changes and sometimes the history. Knowing about the changes can help because beginning with its introduction in 1954 for the Mark 5 improvements or upgrades made can be added to any Mark 5/V.

A lot on my knowledge came from other members like some of those who have posted here. To them I am grateful they shared their knowledge with me. I have also done a lot of my own research. I am not a Shopsmith employee, nor have I ever been one, nor am I a Moderator on this site. I am a member like you interested in the Shopsmith tools.

At some point another new member may come across this topic you started looking for information related to the subject. That is why we sometimes seem to go overboard on our responses. I know the Double Tilt discussion confused you and does not relate to your Mark V nor does the discussion of the spacer for the Way Tubes mounted on a Double Tilt Mark V, 7 or 4. That is one of those discussions that may help someone else looking for Way Tube information.

I am happy to hear you have been successful in getting things back together and working. Congrats. Even though you started this thread on the topic of "Way Tubes" it is your thread to continue to ask questions or comment about your Shopsmith tools or you can start other threads with a specific topic you are wondering about.

No i do not think anyone here works for shopsmith..............I bought a 1984 version of shopsmith for me to use in my retirement. I just did not know how to resemble correctly after taking it apart and moving half across the this great country of ours and putting back together correctly. I tried to find the simple instructions on putting it back together. Not found on this website or the Shopsmith web site. Many people posted about spacers that had nothing to do with a 1984 edition. I came seeking basic knowledge on how to put this back together and found none. Perhaps more complex issues will be addressed.................but as for the basics.....this site failed me.

You might try a search for “base and carriage reassembly.pdf”. I found the file very helpful. It was in one of the links in a post above that you couldn’t see. Hope this helps, I downloaded it several years ago.

Yes I am new to this forum. It was just confusing to receive advice that had nothing to do with my 1984 Mark 500. So now I have adjusted the knives on my jointer. I have put new tires on my band saw and repacked the upper bearing with super lube. A little more cleaning and waxing and I am ready to learn how to use my machine. I cut down some branches a year ago and I am going to use them to learn basic wood turning (three to four inches in diameter). I have not explored other parts of this forum but I intend to. Maybe I will be the one to post how to do a basic set up.

As an "old foggy" on this forum I have one suggestion to offer.

You have discussed "assembly (sorta)" but not setup. My suggestion is that you spend some time learning how to complete assembly and alignment. Using your Mark without proper alignment can be very dangerous.

OK, two suggestions: Spend some time (lots of it) learning how to sharpen chisels before two start your first real turning.

As a side comment - all of this is covered (over and over again) within this forum but you need to learn how to use the search function to find it.

As mentioned in prior posts, just saying "it's a 1984 model" is not sufficient to uniquely characterize it. It's possible to upgrade it to be functionally indistinguishable from a brand new straight out of the box 2024 Mark 7, and/or anything in between what was built 40 years ago and today. 40 years is a long time so assume nothing on your machine is 100% original. Verify everything.

I still don't understand what you meant when you said you "adjust the blades to 1/8 cutting height." Can you elaborate?
