I purchased a SHopSmith MK 5 a year or so ago, and am just now able to use it as I have a better space for it. So far I really like it, got the Band saw along with and have added a few acc. along the way. THe fellow I boought it from had a whole case full of the magazine, so I have been doing a lot of reading. I have used mostly the table saw, drill press, and band saw, but want to start using the lathe next. I need to make end pieces for a round flute case. The barrel is PVC pipe. I plan on making it flat on one end, and rounded at tghe other, and will cut off a slab to screw into the bottom end. I need to make this pretty prescice as the top will just be friction fitted. I may also attach a few ties to cross tie the top for security.

I look forward to talking with others about this really nice tool.
Just bought a used Mark V and love it.:)

Glad you decided to join this forum, whitefox. I lurked here for about two weeks before committing to buying my Mark V. This forum and the people that contribute to it were THE deciding factor.

And since October, I have developed 2 friendships because of this forum. An unexpected plus.

Welcome to the forum.

For lathe work, I'll suggest getting the "live" center (505602). This is a big improvement over the dead center that comes with the Shopsmith.

Be sure and check out the Sawdust sessions. There is a lot of useful information on cleaning and using your SS.

JUST a thought, but you could make the PVC end pieces larger that the pipe. Then cut a groove in it to fit the PVC pipe.
