10ER Lathe Extension

Post by GetterDone »

Does anyone have a 10ER lathe extension?

Since it's been Cold outside, I have been U-Tube and Searching this Forum.

I am thinking of putting this on the list of things to do.

The U-Tube video's that I found are in the 1st thread in the links below.

I found these 2 older threads on this forum.
I just started a New thread instead of bringing these up to the top.

Link: viewtopic.php?t=17924&hilit=10er+lathe+extension
Link: viewtopic.php?p=242758&hilit=10er+lathe ... on#p242758

There is also a PDF on this Forum that I can not get to post yet.

Below are two different examples I have found.

_
Extension Bench 1 r.jpg

.
The one above uses a bench for the extension providing a solid base for it. It uses more parts than the one below.

_
Floating Extension on Model 10.jpg

.
The one above is a floating design and uses sleaves inside the Way Tubes to hold it in line. The Tailstock location can be moved along the Way Tubes.

In both cases parts of a Model 10 are needed to make them which includes a Way Tube, Carriage, Base and Arm for the Bench one, Tie Bar for the floating one plus other parts.

Thanks for the Pictures.

The second one is the way I pictured doing the setup.
That way I can use the Way tubes in their full length. :D

I just can Not bring myself to cut them

Here's a flier from Magna for the factory version of the lathe extension, which is like the one that Russ showed in his second photo. The assembly drawing and parts list may be useful if you make one.

GetterDone,

You could make one without cutting a Way Tube shorter. Get some 1-3/4" Tubing for the Way Tube parts. Having full length 52" Way Tubes for the Lathe Extension may be too much weight hanging out there to properly support.

Something to remember is the Way Tubes originally were thicker walled on the Model 10's until near the end of production when they changed to the thinner wall tubes used for the Mark 5.

BuckeyeDennis,

Thank you for posting those instructions for a Lathe Extension. I don't recall seeing that before. The parts list are Magna part numbers and before the part number change in November 1951. I learned something new about the Model 10's today. :)

I did notice the Extension does not include a Carriage although it is recommended.

Your are exactly Right. ;)
The thought of buying some DOM tubing was in the back of my mind. ;)
Along with the other voices. :D

I think I may go that Route.
McMaster Carr has them at a Somewhat reasonable price.
I just put a call in to the Local Steel Supplier for a Quote from them also.

Yes this is what got me hooked on these 10ER's.

Once I got the first one and felt of the difference in the weight of the tubes
I said Wow these should be on all of them.

So I guess this has never been in a catalogue that anyone has ever seen. Dennis where did you get that document? Please scan it in and upload it here.

This has to be the rearrest of all the Model 10 accessory's since nobody seems to know that it even existed. Even rarer than the elusive lower motor pulley guard.

John, I downloaded that from somewhere long ago. The image I posted was just a screen snap of a PDF, so that I could inline the image. But when I checked my files just now, I found a JPG file with a date of 9/9/2013, which is slightly older than the PDF, and looks to be of a very slightly higher quality. Based on that date, I'd guess that I downloaded it from this very forum.

Here's that file:
