instructional videos
I ordered 2 of the DVDs by Nick. Sent them back. The video and sound were OK, but quality of the teaching is poor. Nick evidently doesn't have a script to follow.
The video by Rick Davis is sooooo much better!

You are quite right there J.K.! Nick does stammer a bit. So does Bob Newhart! Once a T.V. producer told Newhart to get some help so he wouldn't stammer. Bob answered something like - "No Way!" This stammer has bought me a house in Beverly Hills and given me a good savings account".jkandreasen wrote: ....Nick evidently doesn't have a script to follow.....
Nick is an accomplished writer and author, as shown in his posts and in his many woodworking books. He is, for sure, one of the top woodworking experts in the nation and unsurpassed in his knowledge of applications/maintenance of the Mark V.
About his lack of a script and his stammering verbal technique? We have gotten used to it and love it.!!!!!:D

Sorry to hear that you had to send them back. Stammering or not he does give some other knowledge that Rick's passed by. I have both DVD's Rick's is more of a professional type training DVD and very well put together. Nick's are more like being in a shop with a pro apprenticing. I myself just love Nicks way but then I have seen everyone of his Sawdust Sessions and laughed along with the others at his way.

I will take his off script "oh by the way I just thought of this" insertions always as the inspiration of one who knows the 'learner' needs to hear about it. Yes he IS at times 'clumsy, stutters, goofs, human' BUT THAT is why I like him! He IS one of "US". He does go slowly enough so the 'novices' can follow and the 'sages' can think more deeply about what he is 'teaching'. The ones in between may have a problem with his method(s).

BTW I think I was thinking about 'Jacob's' dvds in a previous post.

Keep listening to the on-line sawdust sessions. Nick will grow on you like a puppy dog. I watch everyone of them to absorb the plethora of material he is sharing. The man is incredibly knowledgeable and has helped me tackle an otherwise overwhelming restoration project.jkandreasen wrote:I ordered 2 of the DVDs by Nick. Sent them back. I have paid huge dollars to learn from pro's on a wide variety of subjects. It must be due to my own clumbsyness that I find Nick so much more informative. I am sorry you found his style outside what you prefer. fjimp

I guess some of us like the way Nick teaches, and others of us don't. It all depends on your learning curve I guess.
I for one have found Nick to be a bit too hard to follow with his constant stopping and starting and "oh yeahs." To some that may seem indearing to them, for me I just find it annoying to try and watch on my computer.
He seems to be a nice enough fellow on the Sawdust Sessions, but I myself just can't learn from him. I won't be purchasing his DVD's.

That Nick is a pretty smart fellow, as we all know. But he's also pretty crafty too. His stammering and uhhs have lengthened the cd's to the point he can sell two cd's for what a normal person would do in 1. I like him and when he gets played in my house my wife knows exactly who and what I'm listening to. Makes her happy because she thinks I might get some use out of all that money I spent on woodworking tools! Way to go Nick.
