PTWFE- Chapter 6 - JOINTERS

Got my jointer in Apr 2008 and it has a guard that covers the connector when fence is all the way to the right and the blades behind the fence as it is moved left. Here are some pictures.

While y'all are looking at your jointers for the blade guard(s) how about determining IF a board wider than 1" WILL fit between the guard pivot and the end of the blades!:) That is what got all this guard discussion going. WE are still confused as to why PTWFE states a 1" MAXIMUM board width when edge rabbeting.

Back to 1" confusion: The blade guard is about 11/16" outside of the end on the blades. This implies IMHO that a 1" board COULD be edge rabbeted with a 5/16" rabbet. A 'nominal 1" (3/4")' board could be passed with a 1/16" rabbet.

The pix below show where these dimensions came from as well as to show the blade guard (HEX) hole in the outfeed table.

This pix shows end of blade(s) are 1 5/16" out from fence(same position).

2" minus 1 5/16" = 11/16".

Plausible explanation??? MAYBE!

I'm not sure that I understand the question but hopefully this picture contains the answer.

PUT the guard back on & measure clearance between guard and fence(alligned with edge of outfeed table.. Goldie version is 11/16".

This would be the largest board width possible with a rabbet equal to blade projection beyond table edge(1/32" per PWTFE).

OKAY. Let me try this again. I think the answer is 25/32" would be the largest rabbet that I could cut without disabling safety devices.

Disabling safety devices is something that we never do, right. Check your finger tips. Do you have ten of them? Are they all without unusual scares?

As I said in a previous post, ONE finger has 3 scars(one for each blade)[I was VERY much younger then and had VERY quick reflexes!].

So the 'newer' jointer with the red plastic blade guard seems to have 3/32 MORE clearance.

I do not know if this satisfies the 'where did the 1" Maximum rabbet safety "rule" come from' question, but looking at figure 6-23 one will notice the safety guard IS OFF.
