Mark 5 upgrade

This is a Mark 5 upgrade of my own design. After busting knuckles several times removing the lathe tool rest, I decided to replace that little red handle with a model 520 hand wheel. I played around with the hand wheel off of my 520 and discovered that it would work with some modifications. Mainly a small modification to the Mark 5 table because it will hit the hand wheel.

I will be cutting this off right where it steps down for the handle

Chucked in the 520 I just held a hack saw while turning it at slow speed.

Now with the handle adapter cut down and a 3/8 washer as a spacer the mark 520 handle will fit.

To get the table low enough in the drill press position for the sander to center I had to grind the table a little.

After getting it to work with the sanding drum I locked the table down with stop rings set at about 1/32 inch clearance.

The upgrade is complete with upgraded tool rest.

If Shopsmith would make a hand wheel 1 inch smaller than the 520 it would be a good seller!:)

This is a picture I posted on another thread recently showing 3 of my SS's shoved in a corner. If you look closely at the gray Mark V on the right you can see that it has a black hand wheel installed on it. I pulled it off of the greenie I bought in Massachusetts and gave to my grown son. The slightly modified miter gauge on the brown Mark V to the left came off of the same machine as did the nicely homemade front table extension pictured on the same brown Mark V. The regular gray Mark V with the hand wheel came from Charlotte NC.

Very creative thinking Mark. I really like the chucked up part / hacksaw combo. Sure does save a lot of manual hacksawing that way. GREAT IDEA.

What is the first picture in your second post? I can't tell how that one relates to your project.

The picture you refer to is showing the table position for the drum sander to work. I had to grind the table to get it to lower into that position.

PS.... By the way, the SS hand wheel has a square hole in the middle. I did look for other sources but decided the square thing would be a problem.

It does NOT have the lower all the way 'fix'(cutting relief in table), but does offer alternative ways to 'overcome' it.

Me thinks Mr. Robinson(Farmer/Francis) would be inclined to tell you that a crank handle with a round hole large enough to fit over the 3/8" square shaft and which has a set screw to tighten onto one of the flat sides would work just fine if you are willing to tolerate a slight bit of eccentricity (wobble)!

I have never been one to tolerate eccentricity!:D Actually I thought about that but didn't think I would have to grind as much out of the table as I did. I don't think it will present any problems. It is not in a stress point on the table. I may try to find a smaller hand wheel for my Mini with all the help from this post. The Grizzlys look good. I will figure out the center size to give the least amount of wobble.

9/16" would work(if they exist?)[they don't]. Grizzly prices look very reasonable. http://www.grizzly.com/catalog/2009/Main/246 Bore out to [0.53125 = 17/32]!

4" 'wheel' would clear table.
