Lathe tool rest stem size

Post by sasjzl »

Hi,

The 3/4" by about 2" stem on my 10ER lathe tool rest broke. Can someone reassure me that I can use a Shopsmith 5 tool rest.

Also if you have one you want to sell I am very much in the market.

This is just the very top of the tool rest where you actually put your hand on like in this Ebay auction:

Thanks very much,

Weld tool rest stem

Post by sasjzl »

That would be excellent because I would not have to wait a week for another tool rest to be sent BUT would it be safe? Has anyone else done this. I am pretty abusive on this thing because I am brand new to turning. It is broken off right where the stem connects to the rest itself.

Thanks,

Hi, My 520 tool rest post is 3/4" in diameter, and about 1 1/4" long. Woodcraft has a tool rest system that has posts in various diameters and lengths. Their 3/4" post would fit my 520.

Hi Jim,

I didn't see an image or a link in your post. Here is a link to the 3/4 post in the Woodcraft tool rest system:

Yes. The load isn't really very high in the piece. Any even semi-decent welder will be able to do a more than adequate repair job for you.
