Just to clarify part of what is being discussed here:

As stated, in order to use a standard (non-SS) saw blade with a 5/8" arbor hole, on your Shopsmith you need to get a 5/8" arbor.

Depending on what model of Shopsmith you have you will need either: Part #555608 for a Model 505/510/520 (as shown by Dusty's link) or Part #555321 for a Model 500 (as shown in the table in Joedw00's link below the picture. The picture is of a Model 500 1 1/4" arbor so don't get confused).

I don't know what the lead time is for Shopsmith on these arbors, but I have been watching ebay and the last two went for $70-$75 (with shipping). Shopsmith is $32.00 ($8.49 shipping). Personally I would find a different way to cut a piece of wood before I would pay double or more for a used part rather than purchasing directly from Shopsmith.

My feelings too. I see those prices, and think what are they thinking to pay more than a new one would cost.

I have never been able to find non-Shopsmith blades with a 1 1/4" arbor but plenty with a 5/8" arbor hole. Am I the only one with this issue?

No you are not. Blades with 1 1/4 inch holes would have to be custom modified.
The arbor in Dusty's post is a 5/8 arbor with a large diameter body which is, I believe, is designed to reduce vibration. If you notice that the 1 1/4 arbors have a narrower body where it slips onto the spindle it is because the large
1 1/4 large nut has to engage the larger threads on the arbor and this would not be possible with a larger diameter arbor body.
The newbys may want to take note that the 1 1/4 arbors have LEFT hand threads and the 5/8 arbor are right handed threads and this is so that the blade nut does not come of the arbor while the arbors are in use.

1 1/4" arbor holes ARE common with larger size blades. They ARE uncommon for 10" blades which typically have 5/8" holes. 1 1/4" IS better in spite of being uncommon.

The folks paying such high prices on e-bay, are IMHO either not aware of the continued existence of SS today or very desperate and in a hurry and do not want to gamble on delivery time from SS.

If trouble getting a 5/8 555608, you could also try to locate a 505506 5/8 arbor but NOT the current 505506, which is listed as the Moldy/Dado arbor not to be used with a single blade. Older versions of the 505506 arbors were called "Universal Arbor" and were approved for use with single blades or others (dado, for instance).

As long as the dado set will fit the SS dado arbor (and it should), you can use 6" dado sets on the SS.

If you go to a saw sharping shop they can custom drill arbor holes in the blades they sell. Myself, I got the 5/8" arbor and just use standard blades available anyplace.
