I finally went out to check out which arbor my shopsmith came with and it had the 5/8" arbor. I had no idea that they offered both. I'm glad I started this thread and didn't just order one.

How do you (or how would I) remove the arbor? Witch way does the arbor nut go? What direction does the arbor turn inrelation to the red arrows on the blade?

Mine are a left handed threaded.

I believe comments about how long it takes to receive blades from Shopsmith are outdated. I have ordered three blades from them in the last few months. None took more than two weeks to arrive. The last two less than a week. fjimp

Nut turns in the same direction as the spinning blade to remove it.

Another way to look at it to be sure, with sawblade facing left and arbor thread facing right, look down at the exposed thread:.

If the thread appears to go from left to right, you would turn the nut away from you. (clockwise if looking into the threaded end). This would be a left handed thread and is how my SS arbor is. (non-standard for bolts)
If the thread appears to go from right to left, you would turn the nut toward you. (counterclockwise if looking into the threaded end.)This would be a right handed thread. (standard for bolts)

If you want to have a blade with a 5/8" hole enlarged for a larger arbor, the Heinemann saw company will do it for about $17.50 per blade (net).
At least, that's the price they quoted me to enlarge a 5/8" arbor hole to 1-1/8" for an old B&D hand saw.
I believe they sell their own brand of blades as well, but they'll enlarge the hole in any blade and they do sharpening also.

Of course, you'll have to pay for shipping if its not convenient to drop it off at their place in Ohio. USPS has a flat rate box that I think will hold a couple dozen blades (I can't imagine the Postal Service could make money on a box that heavy for $11 postage.

I suspect you can find other commercial saw sharpening companies that will enlarge holes also.
Maybe some enterprising person could get a special rate doing a batch of blades and reselling them so at least they'd be available.

Punching larger arbor holes is a pretty standard operation in industrial saw shops. Id start by looking at the wholesalers for sawmill blades and or knives and they will point you in the right direction for a local person who can do this. Most of these guys are set up sharpen anything, including planer and jointer knives and router and shaper bits as well.

Ancient question, but answer follows:

ASSUMING the arbor is appropriate for the blade and mounted correctly, to remove the nut, rotate it in the same direction as pointed by the arrow. i.e. towards the back side of the teeth.

When 'running' the arbor turns the same direction as the arrow(see assumptions above). When trying to remove the nut, the arbor is rotated in the direction opposite to the direction of the arrow.

IF you are talking about arbors that will FIT a ShopSmith, I know of none other then SS.
