My shop configuration type (spread out and sloppy) means that I spend a lot of time stepping over dust collector hoses. I often find that I don't really need to run a full 4" hose to each tool. For some things like a scroll saw a very small hose works. On the other hand my oscillating belt sander could use a 12" hose.

I have collected vac hoses for some time since we were in that business for a long time but many of the long vac hoses i collected then are now aging out. Many vac hoses are pretty $$$. I have found several good low cost substitutes. One is swimming pool filter and skimmer hoses, many of which are being clearanced out as I speak. For something like a scroll saw etc. you can buy light weight sump pump hoses for very little cost. I just bought a big long 20' one at a yard sale for .50¢ still in the new packaging.
I actually like the light weight plastic hoses much better than the heavier vac hoses. Connections are easy with the magic of duct tape
