I was ripping some 2x4. Then I dismanteled the saw mode before putting it in lathe mode. I know I have to have the saw on to turn the speed dial. I came in from the garage before I went any further: can I turn the saw on without anything attached and turn the dial to slow? Is the only way to do with a drill or use the white coupler?

You should be able to start it with no load and turn the speed dial with zero problem. If the SS is plugged into a 15 amp circuit that is being shared by other items, you may trip a breaker, but probably knot. If you are concerned, you can do what SS suggests: Install your sanding disk and rotate it by hand while you turn the speed dial.

My SS is on it's own circuit, so I will try that.
