The quadrant (porkchop) should be centered on the control sheave button. The 2nd picture where the retaining loop is missing shows that you have a problem with the speed control assembly. Later pictures shows the quadrant centered on the control sheave button with the retaining loop.

I would replace the quadrant that is shown. Shopsmith had the quadrants in stock last week as I received the ones I ordered. I try to recondition the teeth on most quadrants and bend the legs of the speed control assembly so the worm gear contacts the non-worn part of the quadrant teeth. I replace the speed control assembly roll pin with a #10 allen head bolt and self-locking nut to prevent the legs from spreading apart. I do this modification to some of my headstock rebuild jobs with good results over the past couple years.

Sorry to hijack this thread, but, I have a similar problem.

My newly purchase Mark V was running perfectly until I dialed the speed up to the fast setting.

A terrible noise began, apparently due to an incorrectly set speed stop, and when I inspected and disassembled the speed control assembly, there was no retaining loop anywhere to be seen, and what is referred to as the "button" on the control sheave in the above post was in worse shape than that pictured in image 12 of dknapp1's images

Looking at the headstock exploded view and the corresponding parts catalog, I see that I can order a new retaining loop, part number 504187, but I can't determine from the exploded view whether the rollpin, part number 513734, is the part I need to replace the aforementioned button.

If not, what is the proper part number, or must I replace the entire control sheave?

If I can replace the button, is it press fit in the control sheave, or does it slide in?

More than likely all of the missing parts are in the motor pan unless someone has taken the machine apart. The button presses into the bearing which in turn presses into the sheave. You might check the bearing as it may be rough and a contributor to the loop coming off. The folks at customer service should be able to help with part numbers and availability. The control sheaves show up on Ebay all the time, otherwise.

I wasn't sure if the bearing and button were one assembly or 2, but, the bearing is destroyed.

The retaining loop was a twisted wreck in the bottom of the motor housing.

I'll contact Shopsmith about the part numbers.

I called Shopsmith and they told me that the control sheave, bearing, and button are one piece.

I may see if I can find a sealed bearing to fit the sheave and press a rod into it.

If not, I see that there are a couple of sheaves for sale on eBay.

I see three control sheaves on e-bay. Only one of them is correct for your model.

One is a Mark 7 version. One is a Gilmer version. One is a ploy-v version.
