open a command window and try this command:
ping 127.0.0.1
if that does not work (give a ping with a very short time), then you likely either have dead circuits on the motherboard or the drivers for the motherboard are not installed in the OS. time to look in device manager for non-working devices.
if it does work, then you might want to see if the machines came with a firewall installed that is blocking your access to everything (including your router). if they came from somewhere with a LAN, then the local-only addresses used by home routers may be blocked.

Over the years I have used IE (ugh!) Netscape Navigator (until around version 6 when they AOL'ed it to death, Opera, Safari, Google Chrome and a herd of others. I have been using Firefox for years now and unless they mess it up I'll stay with it.
Buying software except for specialty stuff is just silly. I actually hated VISTA so much that I would have considered going all of the way back to Win-98-SE or switched to Mac (I have an old iMac) if it were not for Linux. I cannot grasp why Microsoft thinks an operating system should spend so much of my time sitting and playing with itself. It seemed that about half of the time Vista was too busy messing with itself to do what I wanted to do. With Ubuntu (or any Linux) the system is always just there and ready. The speed difference is amazing. All of that stuff that Microsoft thinks needs doing must not really be necessary...
MS has lost me forever.
Did I mention, not only better but free as well?
I'll become Amish before I go back to MS.

Chrome is fast. Period. For day to day use I don't need plugins or special download tools etc. I've never had a problem with IE, but on the other hand for unrelated reasons I always run obscenely powerful systems.

To some they look 'silly', but they are quite 'functional'. 'They' do not charge an arm and a leg for them either!!!
This one will 'replace' the one I have been using for the past 5 summers- if it ever needs replacing.

If pinging 127.0.0.1 works, in addition to checking for a firewall, you might also want to see if the IP address was statically set. For your home network, I'm sure you'll want it set to DHCP.

You asked jpg, but I'll throw in my < 1000 words too.
Firefox is more compliant with web programming language standards - it renders web pages more accurately.
Firefox is much more secure. You're much more open to viruses and trojans using IE than using Firefox.
The functionality and feature set of Firefox can be greatly expanded on with plugins. I have security plugins, plugins that aid with web development, a plugin that gives me a home page similar to what Chrome has, etc.
Chrome is OK. I like the way it works behind the scenes. But I hate the user interface.
