Take off switch thinking I knocked one of the connection loose. No

Drop motor and put on work bench, wiggle wires look close -- nothing.

Worked fine before I decided to "fix" it.

I did knock about a cup, yes a cup of sawdust out of the motor hole before I originally put it back together.

What's next motor shop?

Is it 'trying' to turn, but isn't?

Does it make any noise when turned on?

What did you do to 'fix' it?

What 'motor hole' did the sawdust exit from?

What did you do the get the sawdust to exit?

Does turning it on cause the power to trip a breaker or blow a fuse?

There is NO reset switch. Nor is there a temperature sensitive internal interupt device.

i just experienced "motor wont turn off". got the manual out and in the troubleshooting guide, it says, "if motor wont turn on or off, repalce the switch". i ran to ACE Hardware and bought a new SPST toggle, 1 1/2 HP and 20 amp capacity. after installation, it started and stopped and started every time.......

i would certainly blow that motor out some more, too!!!

I would check to the switch wiring if you are getting nothing when you hit the switch. Whites on one side blacks/blues on the other side.

Did you (re)connect the wires correctly on the switch?

Do you have a Volt-Ohmeter or some way to check continuity?

Your description implies no voltage being sent to the motor(wires, connectors, switch, cord, plug, receptacle(power/wall).


If light tapping removed a cup of sawdust, it probably needs to be blown out. Disassembly would make that much more easily done and much ,more effective.

If nothing causing non running condition can be identified externally, disassembly IS the next step.

I'll bring it to work tomorrow to have someone help me with my volt meter.

I never disconnected the wires so that isn't it.

I'll pick up a switch if needed.

Not intentionally I presume! Do not presume it did not 'self disconnect'.

Often times only one side of the switch fails. If this is the case and you are in a pinch to get a job done, you can tie the neutral wires together and attach the black/blue wires to the good side of the switch.On the newer headstocks and switches, Shopsmith only switches the power leg.
