Well you made me get out my hardly used 2 bearing quill to check for 'wobble'.

No play is evident by just handling it. Closer examination by applying lateral pressure to the end of the splined shaft does create slight deflection which appears to be caused by play in the rear bearing(this was a surprise to me).

I Have had single bearing quills with 'sloppy' bearings that did indeed cause the splined shaft to flip about.

IMHO the purpose of the second bearing is to reduce the flop caused by a loose single bearing. Any significant floppiness of the shaft in a quill would indicate to me a need to replace bearing(s).

The function of the nylon sleeve does not include keeping the shaft in line. Its purpose is to transfer rotation to the quill while allowing the shaft to move in and out.

FWIW me thinks ya should replace the bearings.(I assume the shaft is not bent)

I'm not sure that I agree fully with this statement. No single bearing is going to hold that long of a shaft in place even with a new bearing. It has to have some sort of "out-rigger support and the nylon drive sleeve is all it has. Right? :)

I've have disassembled the quill and checked the bearings. I think they are fine. They spin free and smooth. They may be worn a bit, but it is a used quill. I have checked the spindle using a machinists straight edge. It doesn't appear to be bent to my eyes.

If I can find the specs I'll check the run out.
