Some dimensions would be helpful. But it may be a tool for making symmetrical beads on a flat surface such as screen bead molding. Is there a number on it? Stanley usually has a number on their hand tools that can be looked up on some specialty web sites.

Looks like a lap siding spacer, to me.

I think I have seen that tool a few years ago, it is a handheld tool for making mouldings circa 1910

Gene is right, I managed to get a copy of the USA Patent dated 09/07/1915, via my son and the internet. It is a clapboard sideing marker. After reading the patent I still am not clear as to how this was used exactly. It was interesting researching it, I knew someone here would know what it was. What can I say? I just love old tools, thanks for the replys. Truxton

It appers you would hold it by the handle. Then "rack" it down a board, thus making a pattern in the face of the board.

"The clapboard gauge is used in conjunction with a marker, such as this Stanley #88 clapboard siding marker which is used to scribe a line on the clapboard to coincide exactly with the edge of the corner casing against which it is to be fit. Because of the multiple points on the marker, a movement of less than an inch is required to scribe a line."

Thanks Foxtrapper, the picture appears to be the same tool. Now I can see how it's used. It has the adjustments to fit the angle and thickness of the siding. I imagine all you would have to do is just push it to mark the exact cut off line for an exact fit.
