Red on-off Safety Switch

Hi Guys,

This weekend I disassembled my headstock, cleaned and lubed everything according to the Sawdust Sessions video. Boy are those videos terrific! I recommend them to all newbies like myself.

Now for my question. I have 1991 Mark V, and it has the removable, red safety switch. I blew out all the sawdust, but it doesn't make a click like other switches. It works fine, but I am worried about the lack of a positive click when switching the machine on & off. Is this normal, or should I replace the switch?

You better put a replacement on order. Normally, you can hear and feel the switch change.

Did you direct a stream of air from an air hose into the nooks and crannies of the switch? If so you probably forced some saw dust into the innards.

If so it may or may not cause premature failure.

If not it may already be on that slippery slope.

These things have been unavailable in recent past, so it is indeed prudent to have on on hand as a spare.

I would not replace it until it does fail!

Good point, I did use an air hose. I am going to order a new switch anyway-just in case.

I doubt that you have done damage to this switch by inducting dust into it. The safety switch is pretty much a closed item unlike the older switches; however, once they show signs of change it is time to be prepared.

Be aware that this swich is actually two switches. Both the hot and the neutral legs are switched and that is not necessary (in fact, is not done on later units). If one side fails, the other can be used to keep you in operation.

IIRC the concern was with the lack of a definite 'click'(toggle action).

Having disassembled some, I can assure you it is possible.

I was merely trying to offer a plausible explanation how/why it no longer 'clicked'.

Procuring a spare is good advice.
