Ken if you go with the hinged lid you will want the inside of the storage box to be finished. Consider building a plywood box instead of a frame. 3/4 inch plywood will be plenty of support for the lid/seat. You can dress up the front with panels applied to the plywood.

[quote="dasgud"]I hope this is a good suggestion for you. I'm sorry I didn't take the time to draw a new one in sketchup. I know my image editing is really rough :(.

If you build the front face frame to fit tight or even slightly long and the cabinet frame to slip in with space on three sides then you will avoid issues of walls that aren't plumb or angles that are not exact. If shimming the cabinet box isn't good enough solution, you can glue a lip on the outside of all the top rails then scribe cut to fit any contours.
That's what I would do, make the face frame fit tight (build all corners at 90° and scribe cut to fit if necessary) and the cabinet box loose.
I like the idea of making drawers, but if you love the idea of a hinged top lid then charlese has covered the solution for that.
One last suggestion :) don't forget to take pics so we can watch the progress :).

I appreciate very much, the time you've taken to do this. All good ideas, I think.
This project is supposed to be a "quick n' dirty" seat a friend wants. They want the lid to open as a toy box for a childs room, so they're not real concerned about details, but I am ;)

Thanks again to all who replied!! I'm taking a little bit from each.

Moving along ...

Well, I'm well on the way.

Here is what it looks like so far (I used pocket holes so I could assemble it in the job to make sure everything fits):

if this is for a childs toy box - piano hinges are not the way to go.
you should use toy box hinges for safety.

Shoulda

Post by kennygolub »

In hind sight, I probably should have used the piano hinges. The pics show the ones I used, so now I have the problem of covering the 1.5" 2x4 that is exposed behind the lid. I could round-over the back, but that won't give me that much. The lid will still hit anything I put back there when opening.
Suggestions?

Thanks again
