what's the spindle knob for?

Thanks for this information. So far I have been really impressed with this forum in terms of the great information you can find on it, the helpfulness of the members and the politeness of the members.

I thought my question would have a straightforward answer, and it is kind of odd to me that here seems to be nothing official in the manual or online explaining what this little knurled knob is for.

On earlier machines that don't have a retaining spring clip on the spindle, I agree this knob would be necessary to prevent the spindle from retracting into the headstock. But the fact that they kept the knob on later machines like my 520 that do have a separate retaining spring suggests a function unrelated to keeping the spindle from going into the headstock. I agree with Dusty that the knurled finish points to the conclusion that at least one function on all the machines is to provide a grip for turning the spindle.

One thing we have overlooked is the difference in the knob between the single and double bearing quill. The bearing is about 0.2" further recessed in the quill than the old ones. BOTH bottom out on the inner race of the bearing when installed.

I agree it is an effective dust shield and handy knob for manually rotating the shaft(it be a 'multi-purpose part')!

It is also an easy reference to use when placing the saw arbors onto the quill.

After refurbishing my Shopsmith, the spindle knob won’t go back on. It’s as if it’s too small. I’ve tried almost everything except beating it on with a hammer as I don’t want to damage anything. Please help!

Are there different sized spindle knobs? I can see on the quill shaft where the set screw was previously set and unless there are two different spindle knobs that look identical, yet one is a hair bigger inner diameter, I'm loosing my mind. I dont understand why it wont fit back on. even cleaned up all around the edge of the spindle and wire brushed the heck out of the inside of the spindle knob, used lubricant, everything. Even got it hot as I could while not burning myself to the touch. Should I just continue to boar out the center of the spindle knob a little more? I dont understand why its not fitting. Somebody please help!

The Spindle on a Shopsmith Tool is 5/8" in diameter. It has been that size since the introduction of the Shopsmith Model 10E in 1947. As with any spindle mount arbor, chuck or other accessory ever made for the Shopsmiths, any Spindle Knob should fit on any Mark 5/V Quill. Can you slide an arbor on the spindle without difficulty? How far on to the Spindle does the Knob go before it won't go further? Are there burs on the spindle from the Knob's set screw stopping it from going an all the way?

No spurs, and I definitely made sure the set screw is backed out. I can see on the spindle where the setscrew locked in place prior to me removing it. This is really frustrating. I cannot figure it out. It’s not even going on at all. If I tap it a few times softly with a dead blow it seems to want to start going on, but it doesn’t go On more than a few millimeters and the force that would take to make it go further is more than I want to use as I’m afraid of doing damage to the bearings if I hit it too hard. I was hitting it pretty hard to start with.

Will I do damage to the bearings if I were to use a socket or something that would allow me to tap it evenly on and use a little more force?

Have not tried an arbor yet as they are really rusty and I plan to purchase new ones
