The quill and bearings I was concerned about before buying this shopsmith will probably need parts or replacing once I get it cleaned up. It looks like the first owner tried to add a second bearing inside the quill but right now it actually rattles when the shaft of the quill is moved side to side.
Bill knows what he's talking about. The single-bearing quill has a spacer at the back that even seasoned pro's can occasionally mistake for another bearing. Just use a mallet and gently tap the shaft out of the quill housing. This is what you will see.

Here's the part number for that replacement bearing that NuHobby (Chris) sent me. At $5.00, it's a no-brainer. If you can, I think it's probably good SOP to slightly press the spacer back on the quill shaft. That should keep it from rattling, but I'm no expert. Defer to the experts here.

I have the exact same one. Mine is in about a hundred different pieces at the moment. . . I will be following your progress. What color scheme are you thinking about going with? I think I'm going to change mine up a bit. It'll be a race to the finish. Good luck!
More parts cleaned today, I wasn't quite sure how to remove the bearing and shaft from the quill but will definitely do that tomorrow.

The spring in the quill pinion shaft seems a little weak but it isn't broken and still works so it'll go on the todo list for another time. It seems the speed control assembly is in bad shape, the worm gear is bent and it's impossible to turn the shaft by hand when it hits a certain quadrant which has also worn the pork chop gears badly, so the whole thing is getting replaced. The drill chuck works nice and smooth and relatively rust free to begin with, I might take it apart some other time too.
Once I started to clean the motor off it seems almost brand new, any idea if it was replaced or where I can find a date of manufacture.

For the inside of the headstock casing Im going to clean with some wd-40 and use rust converter to prime it for painting in the future.

With me being out on the back porch cleaning parts with mineral spirits in the middle of a Canadian winter with temperatures around -10C (or about 14F) the last few days and even dipped to -20C and colder recently it's all about getting the machine back together and running cosmetics can wait until the spring or even the fall when I can spray paint outdoors in comfort

Pin Punch(1/8")(or closely sized nail).

Thanks, just making sure, wouldn't the first time (or the last) that I hit something with a hammer and later realizing i'd missed something and the hammer was unnecessary

The spacer hasn't cut into the sheave at all, it's just plain missing! Another part for the list of things to order from Shopsmith next week.
Any Canadian distributors or parts resellers I can get things from cheaper and faster then ordering from the US? Or does it all come out the same in the end

LOL not looking for cheap parts, but when there's a choice between a US and Canadian vendor it's often less expensive and faster if you can avoid paying international shipping, exchange rates, duties and extra taxes or fees and extra stops at the border.
