My newish Mk. 5 has the chromed bench-tubes and unfinished (high-nickel steel?) way-tubes. Chromed bench tubes seem to be a recent-era thing.
I have wondered if some of the occurrences of difficulty holding position(headstock and carriage lock) were not the result of super smooth chromed way tubes.
IIRC My goldie has chrome plated way tubes, but they are not shiney smooth. They have obvious marks from grinding(when new). The bench tubes are painted.

Interesting......I do not think I have ever seen a Mark V (nor a 10E/ER) with chrome plated way tubes. The only plating/painting I have seen is on the bench tubes. Early models such as your goldie had paint. From sometime in the 80's on, the bench tubes have some kind of plating. In that time span, the later years have been shinier.

It is possible that my 'recollection' is of 'nickle-chrome' plating. It has a very rough surface that one does not associate with chrome plating(aka antique automobile bumpers from the same 'era'). It does not however resemble polished 10E tubes. It may do so when I refurb the goldie and 'spin those original tubes. Howsomever the original way tubes will be replaced with 10E tubes(thicker/heavier) and will then become occupants of the 'available spare parts' pile.
P.S. My 510 has something if not chrome. Perhaps just a different grade steel???

A quick review of my 1962 manual reveals the same descriptions etc. Hard chrome it is. Not very shiney(ever). Grinding marks still visible after all these decades. Bench tubes painted gray.

I worked in a machine shop in the 70s as an apprentice where we made those tubes.
The finish ( in machine shop vernacular ) is industrial chrome.
Just not as many layers and the polishing under the chrome is not present.
