I have just been given a vintage 1956 Shopsmith Mark 5, ser# 337159. Being totally unfamiliar with this tool, I'm not sure what I have. Two things are certain: (1) the on/off switch (probably original) is defective, and (2) while in table-saw mode, the parts that would allow for connection to my dust recovery system are missing. I have uploaded the 2 files that show these areas. I am looking for some advice that will direct me to the correct replacement parts (essentially the original accessories parts package) so that I can eventually bring the machine back to its original glory. Can anyone help me out here?

I used a Gardner-Bender DPST 20A 125VAC switch that I got at Sears when I repaired my greenie.
The part # for the Model 500 Lower Saw Guard Upgrade is 555294: List price: $54.90.
The part # for the Model 500 Upper Saw Guard Assembly is 513483: List price: $147.99.
The part # for the complete system (both upper and lower guards) is 505875: List price: $184.36.
Shopsmith does not sell the original aluminum guards. You'll have to resort to feEbay it that's what you want. You can usually find the new guards on feEbay also.

The Mark 5 did not necessarily come with a saw guard. The optional one that was available has a rectangular dust exhaust port that makes connection to a dust collector somewhat difficult.

SS no longer makes a guard for this model, but they are quite often found on e-bay. Be advised there have been different versions, so it is a bit of a crap shoot.

I leave it for others more familiar with them to advise you. However, if it has a plastic upper blade guard, it is NOT what you seek. If it is green color or copper colored, it would probably fit(may require minor modification).

Glad to be a part of this SS forum. Thanks for the quick answer...feEbay is not my favorite place and I won't do business with them as long as PayPal is in existence (long story). I did check, though, and did not find anything useful so I am going to try and make do with Shopsmith central. In the Baltimore area, there are several Shopsmith users who are trying to sell their machines...I'll keep my eyes peeled. I fabricate metal, so I might just make one myself...labor of love and all that.

I'll jump in here and suggest you go through the entire machine thoroughly, doing the routine maintenance and checking out things per the thread we have here for new owners. After all, if you're replacing the switch, it's a good time to get into the inner workings and really get to know your machine, and probably save yourself from having to do it later when you're in the middle of that big project.

I have a old metal upper and lower saw guard looking for a new home. The good news is it's yours for the cost of shipping it to you if you want it, the bad news is I'm out of town until 8/22. Drop me a PM or an email if you want them and are willing to wait until I get back home.
