It has nothing to do with the lift assist being beefier. I have pone of the earlier models lift assist and I would not have room for two chests under mine either.

The chests are each 16" wide. There is only 30 1/2" of open space where the chests would be.

Yep you are right it says right there in the tiny fine print that if the cabinets have casters only one will fit.

Now I wonder if a slight modification on the bracket (like cutting off 3/4 of an inch of it) would work?

Hi,

The lift assist now has the note correction about how many cabinets will fit

http://www.shopsmith.com/ownersite/cata ... assist.htm

"Note: Sorry... if you own Shopsmith's steel storage cabinets, with the lift-assist only one of them will slide under the Mark 7/Mark V for storage (if the casters are removed from the steel storage cabinets, two will fit)."

This looks to be a long standing error, the 2005 catalog has the two cabinet note and no mention of having to remove the casters to do that. The cabinets had no mention of restrictions.

I don't have many options at this time, so for now I have pulled the pins making them into two independent cabinets. The one closes end I left turned with the drawers facing front. The second cabinet I rotated 90 degrees and the drawers now face the other end of the shopsmith. Not as convenient but at least are out of the way.

For those of you who might be wondering, this is a picture at shows how close/far away the fit is in vertical terms.
