Ed, what reference literature did you order?

I ordered 877087 SCROLL SAW REF LIT (OLD GRAY). Hardly worth it since it's just the manual for the original version of that saw. You and I seem to have a table upgrade with some slots to use for blade mounting, but there's nothing about those in the old manual. I do not have the quick change blocks though, but it did come with an extra pair of mounting blocks. I think I want the quick change blocks, the price is not that great. I don't see those table slots shown on pictures of the blue model on the Shopsmith site, perhaps the blue ones all came with the quick change blocks.

So for anybody, any info on how to use those table slots for mounting blades? And does anyone know how to remove that table insert? If those are hex head screws in mine they are completely stripped out. It looks like it used to be a loose insert plate like for the bandsaw. The service parts diagram shows only that kind of loose plate.

The Scroll Saw Table information 515815 TL-7019 12/89 I mentioned before is the Owner's Manual update (My Owner's Manual is PL-5156 Rev. 4/88) with the information that covers the change to the Table. Sorry I cannot remember where I got the digital PDF copy of it but it is too large to post here. I'm surprised the reference packet didn't include the later Table information 2 page sheet. That later table uses the same insert (P/N 516061) as the Aluminum Table Bandsaw. It should pop out by pushing up on it just like the Bandsaw. Because the Teal Scroll Saw comes with the quick change Blade Blocks that are in the upgrade it doesn't need a table insert just the blade hole.

I was able to scan the Scroll Saw Table information in a smaller PDF file size from my printed copy then the PDF I already had. Hopefully this will help. It should have been included in the Gray Scroll Saw Reference Packet 877087.

I have a the original Shopsmith 20" Scroll Saw User Manual (no part number) and it does not show the slots in the table. It shows using the BLADE MOUNTING FIXTURE for mount the blades. However, I found in my father-in-law's documentation, a single sheet entitled: "SCROLL SAW TABLE 515815" and it does show the two slots in the table and shows how to mount the blade using the slots.

The INTRODUCTION to this document states: This new scroll saw table is a newer design than the one shown in the scroll saw owners manual (PL-5156). The new table has two blade mounting fixtures – one for right-handed people and one for left-handed people. Additionally the new scroll saw tables insert has been redesigned. This sheet tells you how to level it with the surrounding surface and how to use the blade mounting fixtures which are now built into the table please follow the instructions below.

This explains why the BLADE MOUNTING BLOCK ASSEMBLY (part# 515279) was missing from my father-in-laws parts.

The insert on mine just pops out. There are a couple of spring clips that holds it in place. The four screws under the lip are for adjusting the insert level with the table. Here are a couple of pictures of the insert.

Thanks Russ, very helpful. They really need to include that with the other literature, I couldn't find any reference to that newer design.
ETA: Thanks Alan too, I see you had some info to help clear things up also.

Now I see what's going on with the insert. The two little heads I see are just the rivets for the spring clips. Interesting way to do it.

So how are the blades properly tensioned with the quick change blocks? Is it just the spring action on the upper arm?

The PDF that Russ just posted is the same document from which I was quoting. Mystery solved.

I do have a question for Russ. Do you know if the original style saw blades will work with the quick change adapter upgrade? I have several packages of them: for example part numbers: 555264, 555263, 555262, 555265, etc.

The quick-change blade blocks the Teal Scroll Saw and the upgrade has use the same 5" plain end blades.
