Which SS Do I Have?

I inherited my fathers SS. It is a Mark V, SN 23240. But I can't tell if it was the 500, or if it has been upgraded. I searched the FAQ's and found no reference to what the upgrade from the 500 to the 510 entailed.

I think I may also choose to sell the unit, as I have lots of workshop room for single purpose tools. Is the Forum an appropriate place to let people know if I go that route?

Thanks!

You can begin to see how old the unit is by getting on the SS website and inputting the serial number. If you are going to sell any of the parts, e-bay may be your best bet. From the threads I have read, this forum would not be the place to do this.

You probably have a 500 judging by the number. You can also tell by the size of the table and the table carriage. The carriage on a 505/510/520 has a wheel on it also. Ebay and craigslist are the places to sell these. Here are some pics of table carriages

First off, where are you located (city and State)?

Based on the serial number 23240, I believe your machine was manufactured in 1978-1979.

The Mark V 510 was introduced in 1985. As you stated, it could have been upgraded and as scottss stated the best indicator of that is the table and rip fence or the carriages for each.

Post a picture and we'll be able to tell you.

Check these, you'll be able to tell pretty much without any help:

Hi mgedge,

Firstly, welcome to the forum.

Secondly, I hope that you reconsider selling your Mark V, at least until you spend some time with her. You may find, as a lot of us here do, that even if you have the room for stand alones, you will benefit from using the Mark V. It has many capabilities that stand alones do not. Spend some time on this forum, and you will see some of those capabilities, not to mention the great customer service that SS offers. If you do decide to sell her, you should have no trouble, which leads me to.....

Thirdly, what the kind people here have been trying to tell you is that selling on this forum is prohibited. Please see this thread: https://forum.shopsmith.com/viewtopic.php?t=1048.

Enjoy!:)

Thanks everyone! (I don't know how I managed to overlook the SS web site that laid out what the upgrade was??!!) And I appreciate the gracious way in which my question about using the Forum should I determine to sell was answered. I suspected that it would not be appropriate but didn't see anything specific when I registered.

FYI
Both of these shopsmith places are willing to let you post about selling your machine if you wish to go that route.

http://www.ssug.org/
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/SSusers/

Both are non-commercial in nature and free. You will however have to become a member in order to post.

Serial #43828 - looks like it was born in 1978/1979. Just a youngster.
