Do-It-Yourself PowerPro Upgrade

I was having a parts discussion with an owner who told me he had done the Do-It-Yourself PowerPro Upgrade package recently. Whe I inquired about the removed headstock parts, he stated that he have thrown them out with the trash. He said he did not want to hassle with Ebay to sell them and did not know what else to do with them. I was a little sick for a few minutes after hearing his solution for the left over parts.

Please, I will be happy to pay for any handling and shipping of the removed headstock parts to me for anyone doing this upgrade. However, I would like to offer this suggestion. I have available both "B" & "C" headstocks with all the necessary parts to complete another headstock when doing the Do-It-Yourself PowerPro Upgrade. You can install the upgrade into this headstock so you can keep your current headstock operational and/or as a backup or install the removed headstock parts into this headstock for a second Shopsmith. OK, I also have the MINI and SHORTY frame kits plus a similar to the Shop Deputy kit available to complete a second Shopsmith. I personally believe having a MINI as a second Shopsmith will help reduce frequent changeovers and function as a Power Station. It can be setup with 2 SPTs mounted or with one SPT and the other end a disk sanding station. Many possiblities without taking a lot of extra floor space. What a shame when there are so many of us that would have taken those parts off his hands. With the exception of the motor, the value is not the issue. The issue is that the parts are almost certainly usable and might lend life to still another Mark V/5.

I would have gladly taken the motor for value.

Bill, If I ever do the upgrade, I will not take the do it yourself. I believe that being far away from any service center for my shopsmith, it would be foolish not to keep my original Mark V in case there is any problem with the power pro. I would then do a shorty as you suggest in order to make a second station for sanding. Thanks for expressing this better than I do right now and we are lucky to have someone as experience as you on this forum to make us realise better ways to use our machine.

I upgraded recently and kept all my parts with plans to make a shorty sanding station. That I haven't done yet because I haven't made up my mind about the length. I can imagine throwing them away.

Bill, sorry, but I can't imagine updating ANYTHING, and not saving the leftovers. (Unless it's last months turkey.) But, I would have used them, then.

Unless your house is as small as mine (I've only got 4 ERs, in 650 SF) you keep what you can. (You'd be surprised how well an ER breaks down!)

On a serious subject, is there a SPT power adapter that will hook up to the quill of an ER? Is there a reasonable source of mounting a SPT on the right side? I've got the left side covered, and it cost me all of $10. (plus my work.)

Since I sold all my ER stuff a year and half ago, I cannot go check but I am not aware of any easy way to power Mark V SPTs from the quill side. I had no reason to investigate this as I set up a Mark V headrest on the pulley side and modified the 10 ER way tube tie bar to fit. I was able to add a 5/8" OD stub shaft to the upper pulley and use the Mark V 4 spline hub on the stub shaft. Later, I actually was able to get one of the 3 step pulleys with the 4 spline hub on it that was built as a single unit.

I am sure that anyone with a metal cutting bandsaw, aluminum welding equipment and a Mark V base arm or headrest for the SPT mount could build a frame to set on the 10ER way tubes and hold the SPTs for the quill side. I was able to adapt the Mark V carriage to slide on the 10ER way tubes so I could use the Mark V 500 main table. I modified the Mark V base to accept the 10ER base arm so I could use the Mark V legs with the 10ER headstock. This was my metal lathe and milling machine for a few years. I would believe you need a reversible motor for correct rotation. The 3/4 HP motor I was using had the wiring built in for reverse operation so it just adding wires and a DPDT switch.

A short piece of 5/8" shaft, a 5/8" coupler(think 1/2" router chuck, but with a through 5/8" bore) and a ss drive hub.

Have you seen Shipwright's SPT adapter that came with his Canadian 10ER? It oughta work on either end.
