bowl gouge info needed

Hi Gang
I was trying to make some handles for my SS bowl gouges and ran into a slight problem. I removed the tools from their respective handles and was trying to fashion a collet type handle so that sharpening them would easier without the length of the wood handles hitting me in the ribs.
So I drilled out a piece of 3/8 inch pipe nipple and the 3/8 gouge would not fit the hole. It turns out that the 3/8 gouge actually measures a bit over 1/2 inch. (.503). I checked the 1/2 gouge and it actually measured .630.
Has anyone checked theirs lately? Are all bowl gouges oversized? My inquiring mind wants to know!

I think that in Europe, gouges are sized by the width of the flute, not the diameter of the stock.

Spindle gouges-are measured by the diameter of the round stock.
Bowl gouges-are measured by the width of the flute. Add 1/8" to the flute size and you will have the diameter of the round stock. Note that there are a couple of brands that are exceptions.

Ok guys. Today has been a good day. I learned something new. I never knew that there were two different standards. My SS gouges are made to the Euro standard. I guess I will have to move the lathe to the left side of the garage.
