Grinding with Shopsmith

While I'm certain that someone will find all sorts or safety issues with this approach it is another example of the versatility our Shopsmith machines have. The pink wheel is a 7" diameter by 1/4" wide tool room grinding wheel and the white is a 6" Norton. Both are on Dado/Molder arbors with grinding wheel bushings to match the 5/8" diameter arbor. Lower guard is rotated to act as a dust/grit/ shield. I grind using a full face shield. From low rpm up to 3450 as these wheels are fully rated especially the tool room grinding wheel. Perfect for shaping HSS. Got the 7" wheels from ENCO.

And yes you are right I'm also certain there will be all kinds of safety issues noted about it.

I will probably come up with a way to mount the Veritas tool rest this fall but really don't have to as the tool rest for the lathe works well. Should be a snap. Take the clamp idea from a speed reducer/increaser, some plate aluminum, block for height and off to the races.

The larger "tool room " wheels are very reasonably priced. In as much as the lower guard is used with the Shopsmith 12" discs I didn't see any reason not to try. In fact I've ground on aluminum plate up to 3/8 using the green ceramic sanding discs. Pop the sliding section of the guard off to wipe out the grinding dust. Ground out 4 Hollow and Round escapement plane iron sets from #4,#10, #14, and #18 in nothing flat. I'm still looking for some leather wheels to use for polishing. Any sources out there.

I know there were recent negative safety discussions about using that guard from PTWFE.
