Pace Makers in the Shop

Post by dusty »

If any of you are wearing pace makers and have experienced any problem, as a result of this, while working in your shop - please let me know.

As of mid-day tomorrow, I will be using a pace maker.

No experience and hoping all goes well; but as long as you are doing this, make sure to ask your doctor to tell your wife that it is essential that you switch over to a DVR motor to avoid electrical interference issues....

In a normal household, that might work. My wife, however, is far too skeptical of anything I say. She would twist that around on me and make me get rid of my routers, electric drills, circular saws, etc.

For now and until this whole thing settles I'll just use my old faithful Mark V.

I just finished printing out a pamphlet of instructions and warnings. Looks like good information. It seems to indicate that as long as I keep the interfering device at least 3" away from the pacemaker there will be no problem. I'll just promise to never hug the Mark V while using it.

Reading through this document quickly, it appears that my cell phone is the most likely appliance I use that could cause interference.

I suspect you are right. Cell phones by design broadcast a lot of RF. RF is what would interfere with a pace maker.
Electric motors generate a small amount of RF as leakage, but AC motors are as a rule much cleaner than DC motors in this situation. Newer digital controlled motors are likely worse than older non-digital motors as electronics is the main source of stray RF.
Also, see if the instructions list fluorescent lights. Older ones ran at 60hz which is far below RF frequencies, and that is why we saw flicker. However, newer ones with solid state ballasts operate at RF frequencies today, and could be another source of interference.

One thing strong magnets will turn them off. My daughter a hospice nurse must carry a magnet to turn off pace makers when her client dies. Some client have pace makers with resuscitator in them. When they died the thing keeps giving the body a shot every few minutes, loved ones often mistake this for the patient trying to wake up.

Little late here Dusty, I have no advice here. Don't know a thing about them other that what has been said.

You will be in my prayers. Ask your doctor about the pacemaker and the shopsmiths. He should be able to steer you to the right info.

Let us know how things work out!
