Some days I need a keeper...

Post by robinson46176 »

I was having a fine time early this morning in the woodshop. That is one of many reasons I like having it just down the stairs. It comes with pro's and con's of course.
I was cleaning and moving stuff around and planning future things I want to do there if I ever get the immediate stuff all done. Like probably too many of us I have a tough time keeping non-woodshop stuff out of the shop. That much open floor space just invites "stuff" in.
I had cleared a spot for the Shopsmith that is to be "mostly" a dedicated lathe. I picked a spot near the door to the outside because of the natural light there, my only natural light in the basement. That SS had my SS bandsaw sitting just stored at the left end and I was thinking about what other SPT's I need to find proper homes for.
OK, Bandsaw, jigsaw, a SS jointer I kept (just in case) and my SS 6" belt sander. 6" Belt sander??? Where is it? Having a good sized shop (24'x40') in no way means that it isn't cluttered. :o Badly cluttered. :o
After an excess amount of time looking under / behind / above about everything in the shop I walked over and leaned on the workbench and saw it... Yep, sitting right there on the left end of a seldom used SS sitting in a corner where a long shelf board had gotten leaned up in front of the belt sander... :o   :o
(Shrug) :)
Go ahead reserve my spot at "the home".

Were you once one of my uncles? Perhaps in another life?

I enjoy reading your posts, like visiting with an uncle in the past.

If you're ready for the home then you are not alone, that is about the only way they will be prying my tools out of my hands. I do as much dreaming of things in the shop these days as I do actually doing them.

I got a new tool cabinet the other day. I have a work bench with some space on one end and an overhanging work area that was begging for drawers. I priced the red metal ones I had used from Lee Valley some years back, $196 for 14 of them! Then there would be the plywood and the labor....

Menards has the 11% sale going on and they had a tool cabinet for $199 all put together and ready to go. I'll get my rebate check in a few weeks and find something to buy with that.

So the bench had a diagonal bracket that was in the way, had to remove that and add an angle iron support. Then I dug out a stack of coffee cans I had stashed there. Who knew where all those nails had gone? Now we are not talking the little coffee cans and we are not talking a few unless 28 of them can be viewed as a "few".

Got the tool cabinet in place and everything fits, well except for the 28 coffee cans that are now stacked in from of the cabinet and have yet to find a new home. Of course I can't get to the cabinet, yet, so nothing is getting put in there.....

I do have a plan for the cans but the place I want to put them requires I move a bunch of other stuff to access that area. But to do that I need a place to put that stuff temporarily, outside sounds nice but it raining. So I'm back in the house and here at the computer when I'd rather be in the shop putting things in my new drawers.

So reserve me a place on the waiting list at the home, see you soon.

I think I relate somewhat. I have too many trees in my garage and some other stuff of course. I am trying to downsize to a reasonable size. Two cedar trees, one pecan and one black walnut. I have plans but now all that is covered up. So, I am using whatever scrap lumber that I have to get it out of the way so I can find the real stuff. I got the SS lubed up the other day, got to do my waxing. May even paint the legs as they have some rust on the bottoms and the caster apparatus is in need of a real cleaning. I've made so much dust last year and didn't clean them. So, with all this wet weather, it's a great time to clean. Then will start turning Harry Potter wands to get rid of 36 rounds that someone generously gave to me. Then I have a ball bat to make, and some cherry to resaw to make clocks. But, friends, family and neighbors keep bringing me projects. I guess I'll work overtime to get all this stuff used and out of the way. Maybe, I should visit the wizarding world of Harry Potter and see how they dispose of unwanted stuff. LOL

Well, I don't think it's an age problem. I'm so disorganized that I literally have to stand in my garage and just turn around over and over looking up and down for...where did I put the saw guard the last time I took it off? Where is that miter gauge?

I am finishing up a project for the church auction on Saturday, and I keep telling myself that as soon as this project is done, I'm going to *really* organize everything (not just half the things) before doing anything else. Then, the "anything else" involves doing a bunch of backed up projects my wife wants done, just so I can get the broken chairs out of the shop and reclaim the room. Seems to never end...

No, not an age thing, although I'm no longer a spring chicken myself. Last summer, I suspended other projects in order to put in a big access hatch, flooring, and an electric hoist so that I could use about 300 square feet of attic space over my garage for storage. That helped quite a bit. It allowed me to empty out my side of the garage. And theoretically, at least, to make enough space in my workshop to put all the machines into service. Time will tell ...

I'm suffering the same deal and I don't think it's an age problem either. I just simply don't know what to toss and what to keep...

Keeping the non-woodshop stuff out of the shop is a huge problem!!!

I'm planning a small 8x10 shed which I can build next to the shop so things like extra water hose, the generator, etc... can be out....... One of the biggest problems is, I do metal work as well so, One half of the shop is for welding and yes, with the exception of a double door area, I do have a solid wall separating the two.

You guys believe in the "Hereafter?"

More and more, I'm going somewhere at work,
or even into the next room, here at home.

And, I'm thinking.

"What am I here after?"

Francis, Ed, save ME a room, too!

10 ER, stripped down.
Basic 10ER, Parts machine. Will be a semi-dedicated drill-press machine.
10 ER, a "survivor" of the trailer fire, in the back yard, needing restoration. Has a Mk5 headrest. Finally, stripped down.
Numerous parts, for Model 10 stuff. Except for lower saw guard, A and B adapters, I've got it.

Looking for one more, or some 9 inch extension table raisers.

Greenie, Grayling, SS stand alone BS and BS SPT, jointer and belt sander, 3 Ers with Speed Changers. I think those 3 cover my ER needs, and space for them. :)
