Scroll Saw Question

I have a grey SS scroll saw which I bought on eBay. In checking it out before operation, I noted the post which backs up the blade seemed worn. By worn, I mean the blade has worn a deep groove where the blade seats itself into the v-notch while in use. I can see it becoming a problem as the blade is now a little behind the tip of the "V" created to allow the blade to align itself. There is a connecting flight and a question coming soon.
Should the back of the blade be digging into the post at all, or should it be just resting against it? The post is made of metal. Have others redressed the v-notch? If so, what did you use to do so, and how much did you remove of the notch?

Hi Jim,

I think you are talking about the SS Jig Saw not the Scroll Saw. They are very different. The scroll saw does not have the back up post. The jig saw back up post was originally a phenolic rod not metal. Sounds like the previous owner replaced it with metal. The phenolic wares a grove pretty quickly. You don't want the metal rod contacting the blade teeth. Just dress the end at the same angle to make the groove shallow enough to not contact the teeth of the finest blade you use. Then adjust the rod so it barely touches the back of the blade.

Thanks for the reply I have both a SSJig Saw, and a SS older model grey scroll saw. As you say, the jig saw has non-metalic backup post, but my scroll saw does have a backup post which is metal. Currently, the backup post has a v-notch which is about 1/8" deep. The previous owner appears to pushed the blade hard enough into the "v" to create a notch (about 1/32") beyond where the "V" comes to a point.
I thought about using a triangular metal file to clean up the notch and eliminate the new slot.

I think we need pictures. There is not a lot of difference between the older Grey scroll saw and the present Teal scroll saw. I could be wrong but no model of the SS "Scroll Saw" has a back up post. Both saws operate the same way. Scroll saws do not have a back up post.

My 10er jigsaws have a soft fibre rod that guides the back of the blade

Yes the 610 jig saw has the split tube upper guide but it also has a lower guide/back up like the 10ER. I have two of them here. One has the Magna M on the crank case cover and one has the SS logo. The Magna one has a phenolic rod and the SS one has a metal rod. I don't know which is OEM, maybe both. The manual I have does not call out the material.

Thank you for leaving a bit of saw dust on the scroll saw foot, so I wouldn't feel quite so bad about not cleaning mine off before taking the picture. I got it last summer but haven't got it set up to use it yet.

Re the 10er jigsaw. I was under the impression that the lower guide was only used when the upper assembly was taken off, ie sabre saw mode. but I could be wrong.

I knew you were going to say that. That is correct. What I really meant was that the 610 jig saw lower guide is the same type/kind as the 10ER upper guide. I started to put that in my other post but didn't.
