Restored or Retouched vs. Re-Created Manual Pages

Post by everettdavis »

As many are aware I have been restoring early Shopsmith Manuals and other documents for some time.

Recently after restoring the original 1954 Shopsmith Mark 5 manual provided by Russ Chapman, Wiley Wells provided me a scan of version 2 of the 1954 manual. Wiley later provided me a copy of the missing back page Russ noted was missing, with the Operational Speeds Chart, present on his version 1.

The missing page was severely faded and worn. After attempting to do minimal restoration on the page, I determined that the result would not be up to my standards and still be hard to read for folks.

As I contemplate the restorations of subsequent Mark 5 manuals, and consider restoration of the same page (essentially) in each of them, I decided to simply do a full on re-creation of the chart, and just maintain the litho information on each version of that page, which identifies the entire Mark 5 manual version.

I tried to select a representative font and size to the original 1954 typeface used originally. One thing you will notice is the quotation / inch marks are vertical now opposed to slanted as in original typeface.

Posted below is a side by side comparison, and I have also attached a PDF of the chart which is now in 11 x 17 so be sure to instruct your printer to print it on the paper size you have if you print it.

I have proof-read it until my eyes blur. If you see an error, let me know and I will correct it in the image and the PDF, then after we are fairly sure it's right, I will add it to the end of the restored 2nd version manual.

Everett,

I can't imagine how long it took you to recreate that back page but it looks great. I am going to print the page you created and hang it next to my old greenie. Thanks for all your work.

Everett,
Due to the quality of the back page from this manual I agree you go with the re-creation in this case. Original charts are still available on the 1st and 3rd edition manuals. The next two manuals I have, the 4th and 5th or 6th, (10:55 & 10:56) have the same chart also. The following one I have copyright 1957 4:57 has a different version of the chart. I printed a copy of your re-creation and will compare it later to my originals. I don't expect to find any problems knowing your attention to detail.

P.S. sick about the loss of the newsletters.

I remain sick about losing that historical resource due to mishandling by the US Postal Service.

Somehow my financial loss pales in comparison to our taxpayer losses in the USPS reported on Friday May 11, 2018 in their second-quarter net loss that had grown to 1.34 Billion dollars from the $562 million from the previous year.

I am hoping against hope I suspect that somehow they will still find the lost item and deliver it to me at some point.

Perhaps it is less Freudian than thought to connecting "Going Postal" to "Just Losing It" as we believed.

Everett,
I compared the re-created version to the 1st and 3rd Edition Manuals, plus two following editions. It is so close to the 3rd edition that if a clean copy was next to it they would look so close to being the same it would be hard to tell the difference. Great Job :) I did find the letter "Q" in the originals harder to tell they were a "Q" rather than an "O" on a short stick. Your "Q's" are much better. Of interest the lines dividing WIRE BRUSHING from COARSE and FINE do not exist on the 1st Edition's Chart. Glad you added it and that it is on the subsequent editions.

It is to bad they changed the chart on later editions of the Manual since it only covers working with wood as per the later version below. Less having to look for speeds inside the manual for the early chart.

Chart as shown on the back cover of the 4:57 edition and the 3/59 edition shown above. Both copyright 1957.

Essentially the same as my Goldie(1/62) version except Magna American replaces the Yuba stuff at the bottom.

Yes Everett a scan of the complete manual is forthcoming. Will also include parts diagram etc. and a dual voltage motor instruction sheet that came with my Goldie in 63.

Thanks Russ and James,

James I think your email system from Yahoo scaled back the resolution on yours. I sent you a private email to your other email account.

Here are both Russ and yours with the same retouching applied to both. I am not through with either.

I prefer 300 DIP color scans on most stuff, 600 DPI on just the illustrated parts views.

Thanks to you both for helping me acquire scanned images to work from.

Hi Everett,
When I send you the digital copy of this manual I will include the back cover so you have a 300 DPI instead of a reduced one that meet the Forum's requirements.
