For once, I don't have a problem but just felt like rattling on about my progress. I bought the 510 several months ago (mainly for the jointer that came with it) and I have been cleaning (lots of mud dabber nests in every nook and cranny), de-rusting, adjusting and generally getting it up and going.

Tackled the jointer first and have it all cleaned up and ready to go. Pretty much completely disassembled it, cleaned and then reassembled it. Replaced the blade mounting screws with all new SS screws and lock washers and re-tapped the holes (thanks to Bill Mayo for his hints). Still have to align the blades and actually use it for the first time.

On the 510 itself, did a lot of cleanup, waxing and lubricating. Had a little panic when the quill turned out to be stuck but, with the help of the folks here, I got it out and all freed up. Finally fired it up for the first time yesterday and it protested a bit and took the breaker out twice (I have GOT to get the electrical updated to 20A dedicated circuit(s)!!). Got 'er running by starting at slow speed (makes a big difference) and got some running time on it. HooRah!!

Now get some more of the missing parts, align the table, fence, et al and maybe make some sawdust with it. Really need a box under the SS to hold all the parts and pieces.

It sounds like your making progress, hopefully it will be soon that you can use it. Do you know what else is on the circuit?
SS 500(09/1980), DC3300, jointer, bandsaw, belt sander, Strip Sander, drum sanders,molder, dado, biscuit joiner, universal lathe tool rest, Oneway talon chuck, router bits & chucks and a De Walt 735 planer,a #5,#6, block planes. ALL in a 100 square foot shop.

There certainly is other stuff on the circuit - lights, etc. It is just a regular 15A house circuit. It runs my older Mark V's fine but this one seems to have a bit more drag.

I have the new electric circuit figured out already - I have the circuit (240V, 30A) for the clothes dryer already run out to the house (for a no longer existing air compressor). I'm going to buy a 4 breaker circuit box, put 2 20A breakers in there and split the 240V line into 2 20A circuits. Then run two dedicated 20A circuits - one for the SS and one for dust collection. I'll 'coordinate' with my wife on the dryer so we don't both try to use the circuit. Of course, if I tried to pull 20A on each of the new circuits, I will pop the 30A breaker but I don't intend on ever having that much on both of them. The dust collection will be just a shop vac running into a cyclone. At least that is my plan!

I am concerned(code wise) about what you have described as your intentions. A diagram of what you intend to do would be helpful in understanding what it is.
If you intend to put 4 20A breakers in that new box, be advised it is exceeding the capacity of the original wiring(30A). It is unclear if you intend to feed the dryer through the new box. What are the 4 breakers going to 'protect' besides the two 115v 20A branch circuits for the SS and dust collector.

I also feel uncomfortable with what you plan on doing. You may have the potential to overheat the 30A wire before it ever pops the breaker which could result in a fire. I doubt that it will meet code requirements and even if you don't plan on getting it inspected, the potential danger is there. Also is your present 30A circuit 2 hots & a neutral or just 2 hots. That may be an issue as well. You didn't mention if you have room in your main panel to run any new circuits. If you do, then that would be the way I go, running a new dedicated conductor for the new circuit. Good Luck.

As long as he keeps the 30A 2 pole breaker in the existing box, the original 30A wiring IS still protected. If he exceeds this 30A current in EITHER pole it will trip before his 20A 1 pole breakers. This WILL be a nuisance(inconvenient).

Your point about presence of Neutral IS critical!

I assume he intends to use the 'existing air compressor' branch to use with clothes dryer. If so he would be better instructed to 'ADD' new branch circuit(s) as you have suggested.

I believe he has posted a previous thread on this. In that thread the suggestion of an additional box was touted. The inclusion of the clothes dryer on the same circuit is NEW. This makes it NOT a GOOD way to GO!

Hi Bob,

No where, in this great country of ours, do electric code allow two circuits be fed off of one breaker. If you have a dryer on that 30amp circuit, that is all you are allowed to have. Dryers are always put on dedicated circuits. It is illegal, in every jurisdiction that I know, to have more receptacles, other then the dryer receptacle, on a single circuit. Unlike your standard wall receptacle, no dryer receptacle has the capacity to add more wires to it, that will carry electricity down the line to other receptacles. No breaker is allowed to have multiple wires attached to any single pole. It only takes one event to create a very bad situation. Please take the advice of my fellow woodworkers: Do knot use your dryer circuit to power your shop. :eek:

Thank you for all the comments. I am NOT coming off the main box but rather off the dryer receptacle. As noted by others, the 30A breaker will protect the wiring in all cases! If I over current the circuit, i.e. more than 30A combined, the 30A breaker will actuate and the wiring is protected.

By the way, the circuit is a 240V circuit with a neutral and a ground.

The 2nd breaker box (it will be a full blown breaker box with capacity for 4 breakers although I will only use 2) is a commercial item. It will be wired for 2 120V circuits and will use 2 20A breakers - all the wiring downstream will be including receptacles will be sized for 20A.

The diversity is low - I will have one 20A circuit dedicated to the SS and the other will be used to run a ShopVac for dust collection. All lighting, etc is on separate circuits. The running current on the SS might peak out at 15A and the ShopVac is maybe 10A for a running total of 25A

If I pull too much current and the 30A breaker opens, that will be a nuisance and that is the price I am willing to pay. It is not dangerous! I will not pull more current than the wires are rated for and that is the major concern of the NEC (National Electric Code). NEC also worries about nuisance value and, yes, I'm guilty of that weakness in my scheme.

However I believe I can be safe and that the fire hazard will be zip. Adding more electrical capacity to the house would cost a fair hunk of change - new box, more wiring and a new connection to the power company. Meanwhile I can get most of what I need and be safe.
