These stacks (3) were put in about 1979 or so and are a double faced shelf units a little over 3' wide with 8" shelves facing opposite directions. They are a bit over 6' tall. They are also quite heavy. Books are heavy... They sit sticking out perpendicular to the wall. I am cutting them in half to make two 8" deep wall shelves out of each of them to attach flat to the walls so they will not take up so much space out into the floor. Obviously they will still occupy the same number of square feet but around the walls the center of the floor will be a lot more open. That will give us room to put our library table out in the middle of the floor with a couple of chairs at it. We also want to replace a ordinary living room chair in there with a recliner and it can sit more out in the floor. Once I get these cut and mounted I will still need to build similar shelves to install that will much more than double the number of lineal feet of shelves I have now (a bit over 100 feet + a number of small free-standing book shelves). I have a full pickup load of books in the attic and more than a pickup load still stored in our old house (those I need to move right away). The attic books can sit a while. I am taking one end of a 12'x 30' room that shares a wall with the library (about 13'x15') and walling off a den for me which will be about 12'x12'. There is a window (just an opening) between it and the library which I will make into a door. That will be the only access to the den I want a private spot for my writing
Any-who... About those shelf pins... Instead of the usual 1/4" pins of several styles we are used to, these stacks came with bigger and deeper holes (maybe 3/8") and for pins they used short pieces of "all-thread" rod. Each piece has been de-burred on each end. The shelves have small round bottomed grooves at each end of the shelves so that when you slip the pins in the positioning holes in the uprights and place the shelf on them the grooves are at the pins like a saddle and the end of the groove keeps the pin from being able to come out of the hole in the uprights. By being threaded the shelves and uprights are kind of locked together by the threads trying to dig into the surfaces. That would prevent the end uprights from being able to move apart under some sort of stress and dropping te shelves. I hope this makes sense... Like I said, I'll try to remember some pics.
