Well, I went to look at that Shopsmith someone was offering to sell to me for around $250 on the weekend. Very nice guy, large shop with lots of tools and machinery. He bought the SS new but has been using it very little in recent years since he's got those other tools to use. Anyway ...

I'll probably try to go look at it this weekend and size up its age by the look and colour scheme, as suggested. Having taken one apart gives me a better appreciation of what to look for in a used one!

Actually, in re-reading the guy's email, the number he quoted is actually the MODEL number (555xxx), not the serial number. I hadn't realized that SS model numbers changed a lot over the years.

After some days and more than a few hours of elbow grease, my 4 tubes are de-rusted, sanded, polished and waxed. I didn't have a drill or lathe setup to let the motor do the spinning and sandpaper block do the polishing, so what you are seeing is the result of:

I hadn't thought of that: people on low-speed internet have to wait for the pictures to load, whereas with the links they just look at the pictures they want. Well, I suppose most people are on some kind of high-speed internet server these days...

Taking JPG's suggestion to heart, I have gone back and property inserted my pictures into the posts using the paperclip feature, for easier viewing. I'll attach any future pictures of my project using this method, in the future.

BTW, Irfanview is a very nice piece of picture manipulation software ...
