Re: Shopsmith Machine, painted green, Mark 2

I didn't really mention my use of JB Weld in my last post. I have used JB Weld on restorations but not on the Way or Bench Tubes. The most common use I have had for it is filling in the "accidental" cut marks found on the Miter's Protractor. You can see a saw cut through the face of the Mi...

Re: Shopsmith Machine, painted green, Mark 2

Ed, As for the metal Bench Tubes or Wood Rails, either could be fabricated. To the best of my knowledge, they use the same legs so both have the holes for bolting the legs and bench ends on in the same places. Both of the Mark 2s I own have the metal Bench Tubes which are 1-3/4" in diameter. As...

Re: Power Cord Replacement

Although installing the Power Cord Strain Relief in a round hole will hold it in place it can allow the strain relief to rotate in the hole. This can twist the wires inside the Headstock and could cause problems.

Re: Shopsmith Machine, painted green, Mark 2

Let's cover your questions and comments. The Logo/Serial Number Plate on the Mark 2 was indeed glued on. In fact, the one I restored already had the plate fall off, so I used contact cement to glue it back on. Contact cement or similar is what it looked like was used originally. The Way and Bench Tu...

Re: What to do with my tools

Ed, I understand how difficult it is to give up control of the tools you have enjoyed over the years. Hopefully you can find that someone or several someone's that will enjoy and continue to care for your tools as you have. That would be the best outcome. Having restored and resold a lot of Shopsmit...

Re: Power Cord Replacement

hkp7fan, Sorry to hear about your past experiences with Shopsmith. Someone at the old Detroit store didn't have enough knowledge to understand the differences of the Mark 5/V tools made over the years. In your case anything about the differences of the original "A" Headstock. Unfortunately...

Re: Shopsmith Machine, painted green, Mark 2

Michael, Belated but welcome to the Shopsmith Forum. If you read the posts of Just Bought a Mark 2 that Ed linked, you already understand some of the challenges and pitfalls of owning a Mark 2. As you read it you should understand that I got my first Mark 2 after my first post there. So, a correctio...

Re: speed changer center bit stuck

John, Thanks for posting the explanation of the original 0 to 8 Indicator scale. I have to guess that it did not work out as well as the engineers originally planned. It seems that a lot of belt stretching would have to occur to get to the 3 to 8 range. Having my other Shopsmith's (Mark V 520 and 7)...

Re: speed changer center bit stuck

It may be a good time for some Speed Changer 101. In the picture don1357 posted above the main casting is broken. (see arrow in the copy of his picture below) _ Broken Speed Changer don1357 arrow.jpg . The arrow is pointing to the place on the main casting where the "ear" (above the arrow)...
