You NEED to get the blades sharpened .. end of story .. nothing else mentioned on here should be tried before that.. got a loan of a planer last week to plane oak boards and it (DeWalt .. I hate DeWalt) screamed and complained about taking even the tiniest amount off, burn marks and the whole shbang...

Can't actually find a link to a similar one but it is basically a bit of flexible plastic is all .. I ended up getting into a rhythm of spreading with the glue spreader and then rubbin it back with a cloth .. minimal waste..

Have to say the shape of the floor lamp didn't appeal to me but the rest of the stuff was really nice, in particular the desk ... and the gumbo of course!! can we have a word about your finishing method?? Always interested to hear how people achieve the final look...

How can you tell if it's red oak or white oak .. I can kinda tell when they are unstained but I don't think I would be able to tell after varnishing though I have noticed that red oak I am using at the moment seems to show grain as a way darker contrast after staining...
