Re: Magnetic Tape on 520 Front Rails

I never use the direct read system either. For a while I was using a 520 as a dedicated TS, and I still didn't use it. My reasoning is best stated by this, from the manual on the upgrade 522292 (11/04). Same PN today, for $199.87: " NOTE Once the Scale is set properly, no re-adjustment will be...

Re: Scott's My Growth Rings youtube channel & website

I don't know if there was an "early" version or not. I thought I bought my fence when they first came out but maybe they had existed before I bought mine. That was in the mid 90's. I bought the band saw new with my then new 510 in 1994. Anyhow, I bought my fence in 1995 or 1996 and it looks...

Re: Shorty dedicated drill press

There are two differences between the bench and way tubes besides the length. The first Ed covered above. The other is the finish of the tubes. Early bench tubes were painted and later chrome plating was used. Way tubes are polished metal. It sounds like you want to set it up as a Drill Press simil...

Re: old saw blades

First, they all appear to be non carbide tipped blades. As such if they have been used for years they all probably need sharpening. Carbide is the only way to go today. If you just sharpened 4 of the best blades at $35 each you could buy a 40 tooth Forrest Woodworker II. It is a general purpose blad...

Re: Cleaning sooty aluminum and other parts?

Great! I had no idea if it would work or not. I just know it cleans the soot off of the glass in the door of my wood burning stove.

Re: Adding turning length

IMHO, longer bench and way tubes are the easiest way to go. Just buy the lengths you need and you are done. Heavier wall due to the added length. Will they be a little more expensive than kludging something else together with SS parts? Maybe, maybe not. You only need one head stock, one carriage and...

Re: stuck mitre gauge!

You could just buy another miter gauge. They are on eBay all the time. Still, part of the fun is in the fixing. I wouldn't give up quite yet.

Aquarium air pump aerator tube.

Re: stuck mitre gauge!

That is a special screw with tapered threads. That is why it expands the miter bar when you tighten it. I doubt it is commonly available. Someone here will know.

Re: Shopsmith Mark 5 What When and Where

The Federal Government fiscal year started 1 October back then and I think it still does. Back in the 50's and 60's I always thought most if not all businesses used the same fiscal year as the Fed. I don't think that is true any more.
