520 tables need help

Yes it looks looks like something changed there are different upgrade kits.Something changed in 1986

In 1986 the 510 tables changed. The center hole(main table) was moved. The earlier tapped holes were replaced with drilled holes and kepnuts. It is the drilled holes(a bit sloppy fit) that allows vertical adjustment of the rails.

I think the bosses were changed also. Your pix may illustrate that. AIUI, the earlier version required drilling out the threads and possibly drilling a new hole.

Since you appear to have different rail versions, You will need to make sure the table versions are a match.

You may need to do some shimming.

The holes all look the same I can't notice any taper the holes.
The table in question and another are both 7/8" top of hole to top of table.
I guess that's a good thing.

I'll mess with it a little each night after work all week and read all of Dusty's precision alignment posts again.
If I strive for his precision I may end up with acceptable alignment.
I've seen his YouTube videos so I've heard his voice and tonight all the voices in my head sound like him.

In this video at about the 15.45 mark Nick makes what he refers to as a "secret DooDad" adjustment
in this sawdust session and things magically line up.

I can't find any such thing on my double tilt base.

Consider that a blessing(IMHO).

I do not agree that that is proper use of the 'doo-dad'.

The double tilt eliminated the real reason for it.(that is good)(tie bar, clamp, etc.)

Now if adjusting the doo-dad eliminated any twist in the way tubes, that would be good. Any existing twist will make left/right end compatibility impossible.

I agree with JPG. That adjustment Nick is talking about in that video has got nothing to do with your current problems.

You need to get all your fence rails adjusted equally relative to the table tops. Once you've accomplished this and everything aligns properly with the the extension table mounted in either the left end or (not AND) the right end, then you can consider moving on to the quest to achieve alignment where the extension table aligns perfectly on BOTH the left and right sides. Personally I believe you are as likely to find yourself in this mythical state of perfect alignment as you are to find the Fountain of Youth or the City of El Dorado.

Tragically, many members of the forum have gone insane or worse in a fruitless search for this mythical alignment. Indeed, I believe perfect alignment of the extension table at both ends requires the assistance of a Unicorn, a Lepricon, the Loch Ness Monster and, most critically of all, the new double tilt upgrade.

I almost agree! I question the sanity of one who contemplates trying.

I doubt any of those imaginary mystical things would alter the outcome.

That said, when I rediscover my i-gage(it's location is currently one of life's mysteries), I intend to try and search for that fruit with my goldie(ext table with stud/double nut mount modification).

I truly believe that it may be possible to get acceptable results, but having a left and a right extension table is much easier, but, that means the left is not the same as the right so they cannot be co-planer(there's that word again - perhaps the tables are 'canted'

).
