lubricateing sheaves

The book says to use non detergent oil to lubricate the sheathes, I hate to buy a quart of oil to use 4 drops. Does everyone use that? I have some rem. oil (gun oil) would that work? Thanks in advance for the help.

I use 3 in 1 oil with the handy extendable spout.

Google "zoom spout turbine oil" to find a 4 oz bottle with a 14" extending tube that makes oiling the Shopsmith headstock a very easy job. This was what Shopsmith was using for the headstocks in July 2008 at the factory. I do not recommend using any engine or motor oil as it causes the control sheave to stick on the idler shaft resulting in damage to internal parts.

Also sewing machine oil, electric fan oil, etc. Including those mentioned above, all are low viscosity machine oil.

I recently found the Zoom Spout Oiler at Joann's Fabric store in our city.

Actually that is what my bride uses on her expensive Bernina quilting machines. Jim

Same here, Jim! We use Zoom Spout on my wife's embroidery machine. Over 300 million stitches so far. I was amazed when last servicing her machine. The machine counts the stitches made. It was surprising to see such a large number. Still stitching like a champ!:D

Same oil I used on my Mark V with excellent results.
