Need plans for tool bench under Shopsmith

I made that very cabinet from the Hands On article. It works pretty well. I don't seem to notice it when moving the shopsmith around. I don't have a SS jointer but I do have the SS belt sander on the bottom shelf and it fits just fine. It holds more then you think.

I installed this option under one of my Mark V's. I cut mine so a steel angle iron strip with solid ends welded on were mounted under the back side of the shelf and one nut and bolt attaching the ends near the center of the legs at appropriate height. Then attached the front to the legs in two places with steel strapping tape and a nut and bolt. It even supports the 520 fence. I apologize I am not allowed in the shop at this point for taking pictures. Jim

I haven't had the time yet to build one of these for myself but having looked through all the various approaches folks have taken and pondered the pros and cons of different options, I personally plan to build a free-standing storage case on casters that will fit under my MV, rather than one of the storage boxes that hangs on the bench tubes. I tend to move my machine around a fair amount on various projects and it seemed like this would be easier when necessary if I just rolled the tool storage case out fo the way and moved the machine as needed, rather than moving all the extra weight with one attached to the tubes. Also, I wondered about how much saw dust would end up in and on the storage case if it was hung from the tubes vs me being able to roll it out of the way for an operation where I expected a fair amount of saw dust that wouldn't get adequately captured by my DC3300.

Here's my approach. Not as much storage but easy to make and very flexible. I've remade the outer tool holders 2 or 3 times. (I can provide current pics and some construction detail if you're interested.) Basically the racks are rails with a grooves cut for a particle board shelves. The upper is attached with threaded inserts to the SS legs and the lower sits on the metal stretcher on the legs. (mine is a 500)

I think building some kind of storage unit, that fits your needs, is well worth the effort and cost. Work on it this weekend.
