The Jack-Bench design looks to be pretty solid and you can pick a couple of scissor jacks at a junk yard pretty cheap.keakap wrote:A voice in mah haid is screaming "hydraulics!"
Ever watch a house be lifted? Dozen or so hydraulic jacks placed strategically (funny how that word looks some like "tragically") and connected to 1 source pump. Flip a switch.
'Course with the Mark V all you'd need is one jack per end, tucked away in the inside of the new legs...

A friend was building a model steam locomotive and found a hospital bed mechanism to build it on. The engine weighed nearly 1000 lb. but he could crank it up and down:

I've seen these before and always though they might make for a relatively simple solution for changing the SS height.

Too expensive for my taste to experiment with as I don't seem to have the discomfort issue with either the lathe or the tale saw. At least not enough to make major modifications.
The hospital bed mechanism looks interesting as well.

I did not equip with Shopsmiths in spite of the setups but because of them.
1 1988 - Mark V 510 (bought new), 4 Poly vee 1 1/8th HP Mark V's, Mark VII, 1 Mark V Mini, 1 Frankensmith, 1 10-ER, 1 Mark V Push-me-Pull-me Drillpress, SS bandsaw, belt sander, jointer, jigsaw, shaper attach, mortising attach, TS-3650 Rigid tablesaw, RAS, 6" long bed jointer, Foley/Belsaw Planer/molder/ripsaw, 1" sander, oscillating spindle/belt sander, Scroll saw, Woodmizer sawmill

You don't want to rest anything long term on the lifting device, so you would need a second set of solid legs or risers. Even that motorcycle lift, the bottle jack will slowly leak down if you don't have anything locking it out.
If it were me, I would build simple risers under the legs and an electric chain hoist with a spreader and furnitire straps to life the machine without damaging it. Keeps floor space clear and I'm sure you could find other uses for it.
