what glue to use on bandsaw cover (adding window & dust port)

Well, I emailed Shopsmith and got the following:

"... You should use an ABS glue. This is available at hardware stores and big-box Home Centers in the plumbing department. This ABS glue is used to glue this type of plastic and plumbing fittings to ABS pipe.
..."

So, next time I'm at the HW store I'll get some, along with some hinges so I can make it swing open for cleaning.

Repair worked and that band saw was sold and I kept a newer one.

Just a tip about abs plastic and abs cement; The magic of abs is that it can be dissolved in acetone. So to repair or glue an abs bandsaw cover and have the glue color match the cover is simple. Find some abs the same color as the cover and dissolve it in acetone and presto you have made abs cement that matches the color of your cover. You could also mix and match colors of abs to get just the right color, sort of like oil painting, but not quite as easy as Bob Ross made it look.

I used clear packing tape to hold a clear piece of a plastic camshell package on mine. Hasn't fallen off yet. Put piece above and below the hole I cut in the cover.

Hmm, I can't snap the one I have out, or in, as I'm trying to save the $10 something by using a piece of plastic cut from a package. I just cut a rectangular hole in the cover - drill, saw, file, done. It makes sense now why they make the real ones so they clip in.

I like the idea of hinges and a magnetic catch, though I'll see how it does with nothing for now. I'm just moving from hand tools and shavings to power tools and sawdust and shavings and decided this past week that dust collection is my next step. I'll need to add a port to the bandsaw as well. Perhaps screws or bolts it is, though I'll look into those glues. Even if I don't use them here it is always good to learn about new glue, and two?

Sololastic 2: "available in 40 standard colors and up to 470 custom color choices" !! What do you think the chances are that it comes in Shopsmith "hmmm, what's the ugliest grey we can come up with?" grey?

It sounds like you are using a piece of thin plastic. I used 1/8" plexiglass and CA glue. It has been on there since the year SS came out with the modified cover (10 years or so?). One thing about CA is that it needs a CLOSE mechanical fit. Make sure you get all the burrs off the corners of the hole in the cover and the plastic window piece. As for it getting dusty and needing to clean it, mine does not get dusty and I have never had to clean it since I installed it.

Can you really pop the "Real" ones out without taking the cover off? If not then that is not a feature to facilitate cleaning.

As far as adding a dust port, I would certainly use machine screws and nuts. I would go with 4 or 6 ea. 10-24 machine screws, washers and nuts.

But, if the piece you are trying to glue onto the cover is not ABS I doubt it will work.
